Lessons learned while climbing at 20deg F.

Wow, I go away for a few days and come back to an argument.
Lessons learned:
- Layering works well.
- Balaclava worked well
- Bring more gloves
- Try different boots.
- Don’t post pictures.

I know that the idea of a tree that is not in someone’s front yard, in a park, or along the urban street is hard for some of you to imagine. This is a tree out in the “wild”, out in an actual forest. Would it of been OK by you purist if I cut the tree down to make lumber? Or if I cut the tree down to make room for a house? The owner of the tree wanted the Internet receiver antenna, transmitter antenna and radio installed in that tree, the owner of the tree wanted to use his tree as he saw fit.
I have previously stated my reasoning for completing the job in the allotted time and conditions and stand by my reasons.
My “education level” has served me well.

To all, be safe and best wishes for the new year.
Pat.

LMAO In NJ hunters use to buy gaffs to climb trees for their tree stands. Now if caught with them while hunting it carries a 1200$ fine.

Nails, you might know me...please don't spike trees...MattMan, big respect to you for what you do. Thank you for your contribution. I understand how grey areas arise. It starts with equating installing antennae in the cold with infrastructure support after a weather event. I am not trying to walk near this slippery sloap. However, I will be obstinate in my position that pruning with spikes is just wrong...for many established reasons...sorry

To anyone offended by the use of the word education in my post: I am sorry. I was really suggesting that by learning what I have learned, most of which you may already know, you might be motivated to see things the way that I do. It's unfair to make that assumption...

Enforced by whom? NJ DNR?

Game wardens thats who, Even heard tell of them taking guns from said hunters till fine is paid.

How about ice creepers for ice covered trees. If the issue is traction then they should do the trick while only penetrating the ice and not the bark.

And of course there are extreme examples such as the mid-storm line clearance. This is just not one of them.

It's the challenge to our skills to find an alternative.

Happyclimbing no need to say sorry. If you post a picture of yourself using spurs on a none takedown then buck up and deal with the criticism. Things are always gray at times but for goodness gracious don't post a picture blantantly disregarding the standard. Whether you agree or not.

Strange as it may seem, we can imagine a tree in a forest.

Then you'd be doing a removal and gaffs are fine.

[/ QUOTE ] So does that mean he determines the way you access the tree? While some may feel it's not the highest and best use of the tree, it's not unusual.

Having climbed in those conditions, I can relate.

If I have half of a maple split out on 13.2kV during 50mph wind gusts in the middle of an ice storm (in the dark no less!). you can bet you booty that the hooks are coming out!

until you work in the the belly of the beast.

I know that some people are thinking that it is crazy to work in those conditions, but we have a job to do for the people that need power.

Ha! I thought the thread was over a while ago too. I thought all the pointers for cold weather tree climbing was communicated well.
