Laptop

I am in the market for a laptop. Here is what I *think* (im a treeguy afterall!) I want.

-Would like to stick with Windows so I can plug and play at the office and home without patches/software.
-14"-15" screen
-Fast
-Lots of memory
-USB 3.0
-Great keyboard, backlit?
-STURDY!!
-Light and portable
-$1,000 budget

I am leaning toward an Ultrabook or the Lenovo T420s.......?

Bull the misses and I just got an HP Pavilion g7 from Best Buy with Microsoft Excel for under $600...Best part is it was a plug and play deal,no setup needed at all...Not sure it has what your looking for in a computer but were stocked about it...

I just bought my first Smartphone. I have entered the world of poking phones with my fat (callused, broken, dirty) fingers.

I almost got a Samsung tablet. I went with Android so I can do business stuff (Windows) on phone. I want to email invoices/estimates from the field. The tablet looked like a bigger version of a phone, just does not take calls. Would be nice tool to show customers pictues (before/after) and do the invoice/payment thing from the truck.

ARE LAPTOPS going to be replaced by tablets??

I was going to go with a tablet, but the lack of ports, memory space, and inability to play PPT presentations are holding me back from a tablet purchase. I use a Windows Phone 7 and wouldnt think of using anything else. i can create, modify, and publish Word, Excel, PPT, etc right from my phone!

have you heard of a chromebook?

http://www.google.com/chromebook/buynow.html#features

I use Google Docs to store, edit, and share my Powerpoints, word documents, spreadsheets, pictures, PDFs, etc. It allows me to access any of the above from any computer anywhere with internet connection. (home, school, vacation, anywhere.) Google docs is free and has no storage limit. It has tons of great features, especially when it comes to files multiple people are editing. Check it out :)

I think Google docs is the way to go, regardless of what computer you get. I have never used a chromebook, but I have heard only good things about them and want one myself.

----OOPS----
Hope that didn't sound like a commercial for google docs. but it has been SO helpful for me having to work on school assignments at home and school. I think it is huge innovation and I hope it will help you guys in some way, although I know you guys dont write as many papers as I do anymore.

Whats the storage like on these? Can I store what I need to without dragging a bunch of thumb drives around with me?

Do they have ability to play CD/DVD?

the memory varies between the actual computer you get, but it is relatively little compared to your "standard" laptop. The concept behind the chromebooks is that everything is "cloud-based", meaning everything is stored on the internet, resulting in as much storage as you need, none (or very little) of which depends on the specific computer you are using. Take a minute to check out Google docs, I think it will help you understand my poor explanation. :)

there is no CD/DVD player on them, but you can get a CD/DVD player/burner that plugs into the USB slot.
