Lanyard twist?

Hey @swingdude has a super valid point too. The extension to that point is the fact that the steel core is NOT A SAFETY FEATURE! Notice I yelled that. A rope suitable for the task is just as safe and depending on the type may actually be safer.

Thanks guys. I also have a new Climb-Right steel core flipline that I bought a month or so ago. (Forgot that I had already bought one.) At first I was surprised to hear, from the Wesspur guy who does videos, that a saw will cut right through a steel core flipline. But then when I thought about it, it made sense. Twelve years ago, I had never heard that...I was under the mistaken assumption that they were "chainsaw proof." Now I realize the steel core is just to make the flipline stiff and flippable...nonetheless, thanks for pointing that out, Stephen. Definitely worth shouting it, too.

I would dump the steel core. Cannot be inspected and doubt if it is spliced. The crimped type are susceptable to corrosion that cannot be inspected. @Stephen Moore correct me if I am wrong.

I saved all the paperwork that came with all my climbing gear, so I checked. The Yale Maxi-Flip has a "free-flex flemished eye splice," a "heavy-duty thimble" and "Maxi-Jacket Coating"...whatever that is. And for the past 12 years, it's been in a cool, dark, dry suitcase with my other climbing gear in the house. (And was never used before this year.) Mine is 5/8" x 15'

It’s a Yale if I read right. Best steel core there is. Spliced and none of that moisture holding shrink wrap. I suck on spurs.

I would ditch the idea of a double ended steel core. Learn rope climbing, then once you get the basic stuff down go back to practice spikes. You should always have a bailout option, and while going up the tree you can use your climbing line as a rope flip line for going around obstacles. Or better yet throw it up into a higher crotch, but rope, rope, rope! So many what ifs. What happens if you gaff your ankle? Hornet nest? Blah blah, you need a way to bomb out quickly!

Yale is bomber, splices no crimps that corrode.
Climb right is the style that killed the climbers. Shrink wrap and crimps causing corrosion, damn things were never recalled and a half asses safety notice was published. If one ever shows up on my crew out come the bolt cutters

He’s right! One day you will find a nest of stinging creatures! Make no mistake about it you life will be in grave danger! That woodpecker hole might be full of stings! Or if you are in paper birch very common to see huge yellow jacket nests, the large paper kind. The mix chewed up birch bark with their gluey saliva to make the hive. I’ve been chased out more than once! One time without a rope to rap down on because it was a short tree! Bad bad bad! You will piss yourself in fear as they start circling you with bad intent!
