Knee Pain & Foot Ascenders

Interesting point about centering pressure Richard.

Fun to hear your perspective dmonn. People taking your thoughts to heart and applying them will have all the "problems" melt away I bet. When I climb rope it's not pretty, do you have any video you could post so we can see what better form might look like?

When I'm climbing normally it doesn't bother me. I went through a stage of testing lots of different hitches and climbing systems last fall. Instead of climbing 80 foot a time I noticed I was going up ten to twenty ft then coming back down. I use a CT ascender and a SAKA. When I climb I use my right foot ascender to go about ten ft initially, stop to connect the SAKA then move on. I noticed I was climbing mainly with the right foot ascender and taking big steps. Smaller steps help but when I quit testing hitches and started climbing normally again the pain quit.

You guys need to remember that just because you are climbing with one foot ascender, doesn't mean you need to use just that one leg. That is definitely bad form even in short doses.

When advancing short distances with just a right foot ascender, place your left foot on top of your right instep and push with both legs.

Come early to the Georgia comp this coming weekend, I'll be working with Chris Coats on Friday where we will have a fun/hone your skills, climb set up and you can learn from an expert ( Chris).

With the CMI foot ascenders it was heavily discussed years ago on other forums that using a left ascender in right foot, or right ascender on left foot made it more comfortable and efficient. I moved to pantin before trying this myself, but may assist your problem... never know until you try...

An option with the SAKAmini is to set one at knee height and the other at ankle height. Using the foot loop on both feet centers the pressure directly above the foot, not side loading like spikes or foot ascenders do.
I started doing exactly that with my two SAKA minis last Fall and it works great. No more ankle pain at all. These SAKA minis are very compact. You can literally wad them up in your pocket if you have to hike any distance with minimal gear for a rec climb.

Heard he's not selling them anymore?

Are you meaning to say climb with the rope on the outside of your leg? Just trying to picture this in my head.

Agreed Dave, technique that I use all the time.
