Kleins spike question

Hi guys new here. I bought a pair of Kleins spikes in a deal package for fifty bucks. The only down side was that the spikes had pole gaffs in them, so I got my father in law to order me a pair of tree gaffs. Well when the new gaffs came in I took them to his shop and tried to remove the old gaffs. Long story short, I had to drill out the center of the bolts and use an ez-out to get the things out. Would it be a good idea to put some anti-seaze on the new bolts so I don't have to go through this again.

I have my Kliens for near 18 years now and have no reason to remove the gaffs ever, unless one were to break or something. If taken care of, they should last a lifetime.

Yes I understand there is no need to remove the gaff unless I need to but what I asked is would it hurt to put some anti seaze on the new bolts? Would I have to worry about the bolts backing out?

I don't see a problem with it. All of our gear needs to be inspected regularly, so if they start to back out you'll catch it before it becomes an issue.

Like TopHopper said they will last a lifetime! Klein makes a great tool.

If you are installing a new gaff, then I dont see a reason NOT to use some loctite on there. It may present an issue if it works too well nd you damage the climber trying to take them out in the future, if that need ever arises?

I use one of those little pencil torches and apply a very narrow hot flame to the screw head.
Takes about three minutes, just did a pair of titaniums about an hour ago.

I would use a 'locktite' that's removable (Loctite 242). No anti-seize.

You shoulda tried the pole gaffs before removing them. I use pole gaffs 98% of the time. They are more comfy than tree gaffs.

But tree gaffs will get you through times of no pole gaffs better than pole gaffs will get you through time of no tree gaffs.

I had this same experience - bought some Klein climbers with pole gaffs and switched them out for tree gaffs, then found myself up on an ash with a big gap between my leg and the bark. The longer gaffs just weren't necessary and I wished that I hadn't switched them. They're definitely not convenient to swap back 'n' forth, so I understand the theory of always using tree gaffs rather than the other way around.

I know it is too late ... but you really want a pair of each type in your bag. Your Kleins would have been fine until an affordable pair of tree gaffs came your way. I have Klein tree and Buckhingham pole.
