the retracting reels that worked turned out to be too expensive to make it work. Tried to get a good deal on them but I concluded that it wasnt worth it. Bungee is much more economical and also durable.

What kind of retractable reel is it where could I buy one?

I will see about finding the video where Dan Holliday talks about the design he's made for himself, but it's basically a rigid system that attaches a foot ascender with a stiff tether to a foot strap. He freely tells folks how to make it.

My last home brew knee ascender I would pull the bungee taught and half hitch it around my thigh then clip it to my lanyard ring on the corresponding leg. Worked exceptionally well. This time around I’ve bought a HAAS and haven’t had a chance to try it out in that config.
