Joy of rigging and felling

I'll be saving this to my "training" playlist - using a stump to get 6 more inches will be in our next tailgate talk.

I could of used a ladder and possible not crushed it or the way the tree branch was arched put myself in an awkward cutting position. But really the only reason I did that was so I would have face full of sawdust. That stump wasn’t going anywhere I actually wish I Cut 2 ft higher lol. The best training vids are the ones where people actually get hurt. Na but your right if your feet leave the ground u should be on a structure. Ladder. Or tied in. I wouldn’t let one of my guys do that.

Sure there are a few sketchy moments and methods, but what the heck were you thinking posting a video of yourself working in shorts, tenny shoes, and no helmet. The tree/safety police around here are gonna be on you like stink on poo-poo! Rookie mistake bro!

Trying not to hijack this thread, but I don't think you are to far from me - we should meet up sometime. No sarcasm and all honesty Rico- I could learn a lot from you about felling. I went to HSU and miss the redwood coast - love to visit and learn a few things. I'll pm you and we can exchange info.

Rico,

Your “safety police”comment is unwarranted and a bit professionally insulting. The vid is ripe with sloppy work and substandard practices. This is a purely professional judgement on my part. Not meant to insult personally.

To not comment on blatant issues and/offer solutions is tacit approval. What we allow, we condone. While I am in no position to “allow or disallow” jaaatree’s actions(nor do I want to) I can certainly comment on said actions should they be willingly put out there.

The comments made by others are valid. To simply write them off as the ramblings of “safety police” is juvenile and misses the point. This is a hazardous industry ripe with poor practices and all too often senseless death and injury . You have been around long enough to know this better than most.

I cannot speak for others, but when I criticize or offer suggestions, I do it not to “police” but to help. To offer back to this industry some of what I have been given.

If jaaatree was looking for hugs and kisses, the video should have been posted where no one would know better or even worse....not care.

That's well written and logical Tony. While I think I saw some high level work in there, it wasn't a wise choice to include the controversial stuff.. In watching it again, I particularly didn;t like the merry-go-round sequence. Like playing with a chainsaw is some kind of game..

It seems like he has the skill and confidence to pull off some impressive cuts. Far beyond your average pro on youtube... BUT I just wonder if in the long run he might end up hurt or worse. That's the thing about this business.. Time and the law of averages is always working against you. What may look like a safe move 99% of the time can come back and stack the odds against you if you do it often enough for long enough.

Ha! The Mary-go-round was the one thing that I honestly enjoyed. More so from a art film point of view. The butter balls is what got me fired up.

I wouldn't be so quick to judge them.... differnet strokes for different folks... we can;t judge his market or clients because we don;t work there... That type of pruning might not have been his idea, faced with a previously hammered tree and a client that will just get someone else to do the job if you won't, its tough to judge another til you;ve walked a mile in his shoes..

Most of the critique from the safety police is right of course but you knew that anyway.

Nice video and music.

Come on man, everyone here musts know by now that I have a serious "juvenile" streak, but it really shouldn't be to tough to see through my sarcasm. Its obvious from my comments that I believe he is doing some dangerous stuff. As I have my own history with some the Tree police (they do exist) around here, I was just having a little fun.

Seriously though, Jaaatree (cool name by the way) if your listening, brother you need to tighten up some of your methods because they are straight up dangerous. Seriously! Be safe out there, and keep rocking that piano.

Oops I almost forgot. Hugs and Kisses to all.

Rico,

Don't take it personally. I am not calling you names, just trying to surmise your comments. I obviously missed your sarcasm, but to my defense it was not obvious. I admit I tend to overreact to the terms you used, but I am just tired of the same old same old and having my and other's intentions misconstrued.

I am over it if you are!

The real safety police write tickets. Which is usually one of the least harmful ways that tree workers can screw up. That and getting a finger wag on the buzz.
Chainsaws still cause more problems than they solve. Science, bro.

I used to worry about the Tree police but I don’t I’m a ppe safety guy about 60% of the time and that’s. An improvement.
I never was really bothered by the criticism. It’s how I got to 60%I i

I know that I have a 60% chance of getting less hurt every week. And when the chain is loose be extra careful. Till you have time to tighten it.
Just messing I just got done tighten it. Cleaning bar. And sharpening it. Sometimes after you do your first cut it loosens up a hair. So I finish cut and retightened. I’m almost 40 now. Been cutting for 20 yrs have never been hurt. Had to call a contractor. Or Injured someone. I cut trees I’ll knock on some wood tomorrow.
Keep up the ppe chatter next video I’ll try to be at 100% with the helmets. I have to take a video of the way I cut and you’ll see why the shorts work for me. It’s because my legs are never in danger of getting cut. I never put them in the kickback zone. Hard to explain I have to show nextvid

Finally someone who understands some of those cuts where not your normal rigging situations. I have 60more vids with and I quote ‘’crazy cuts ‘’. I say maybe to you. To me it’s something I been doing on the daily. Anyone can make a tree or a branch go down. But can you make it turn 180 degrees or more, then swing over a house on one rope. Finally when hinge breaks free branch comes down perfectly level. This example is why I cut trees.
Sorry guys I will work on the helmet part and no more shorts it’s getting cold out anyway. It’s hard to take really detailed videos of one of the rigs I’ve done.
But I’ve heard from people that have worked with me. That I cut like no one they ever seen before. I am self taught. Went to college to be an architect had a side landscape and tree thing going for extra cash.
Did 1/2 internship at a firm and said I hate this but I luv this. So I learned by reading. Experimenting. Practicing small. Now I practice bigger. Math and angles always came easy for me. So I use in my everyday work. I love my job and my piano more than my wife. These are her words time to time.

Jaatree, I love the title of your video, and thanks for contributing. You stuck your neck out in posting that video. I hope you stick around Treebuzz. I've learned a lot from the others in this forum. Interacting with the folks here have definitely challenged me to step up my own professionalism.
