Japanese Cedar, Baldcypress...noob needs help figuring out tree type

Hi guys,

I've been trying to figure out the name of my favorite tree for a while now with no luck. Just ordered the book Trees of North America, and think I've narrowed it down, but wanted to ask the group prior to ordering 10-20 trees for my yard. Originally, I thought it was the baldcypress, but after comparing the cones, I had second thoughts.

Like I mentioned...I originally thought they were baldcypress based on the branches, but after comparing the cones...now I'm leaning towards japanese cedar.

What do you guys think?

Hey Jeff (nice name...btw...mine too!)

I checked out the yew, but the region isn't right and I think the fruit/seeds are different. The cone was what made me lean towards japanese cedar after seeing some strikingly similar cones in a google search.

I thought more cypress as well...and was actually surprised to learn that the japanese cedar is actually a cypress and not a cedar.

In about 6 weeks there will be more highly qualified aborists than you can imagine, from all over the USA & several other countries, at Freedom Park for the Charlotte Arborist Assoc TCC ! (4/21-4/23/17)
That's about 60 first class climbers; 50+ volunteer aborists; and many many arborist spectators ! ! !
- from all over USA, Canada, UK, Sweden, etc .................. even Charlotte, NC ! ! !

Correct. I used to be a climber, and was not a trained arborist.

However, I'd guess that 95% of these CAA TCC climbers ARE arborists.

You asked for some help.
I offered that a lot of knowledgeable people would be at the site you stated.

In the future, I may just ignore your posts.

IMO we already have way too many negative people that I get exposed to.
