ISA/TCIA violatations

deevo

Been here a while
Ok so a friend of mine who owns a fairly big tree co an hour away from me who helps me out from time to time sent me an invoice for a job he did for me (storm work) which I promptly paid. On his estimate/invoice sheets he has member of TCIA which is he not and ISA certified arborist and Ontario chapter member which he also is not. I helped him also with his template earlier in the year, but he went about his a bit different. I know if I confront him about this there will be some ackward friction.....should I bring up the issue with him or should I let it slide? Just irks me that I pay my TCIA and ISA dues, wrote the exam, promote quality tree work and ethics and this false advertising goes on!

He is using old (pre-printed) forms, and hasn't got around to ordering new ones? Or, he is simply a duplicitous unethical scoundrel. If the latter, I hope his pseudo credentials don't reflect his actual work.

Nope they are brand new forms. He is a good tree guy, don't know why he's advertising something he isn't or a member of.

Not confronting him on his bad behavior is supporting it.

This is wrong and you seem to be saying that he knows it too. A sign of poor character.

I've never liked dragging people around on MY shirt tails, he needs to join up or get off.

Disapointing, but I seriously doubt any of my clients or potential clients ever check up on my credentials. Customers are very trusting people for the most part. In the case of your tree guy, what will the "punishment" be if he is exposed?
A "cease and desist" request from ISA / TCIA? If that is the total extent of the punishment for the crime, then the risk : reward ratio is skewed in favour of shysters masquerading as something they are not.
I don't think either organization is willing to go after guys like this. What is the deterrent? A public service announcement that the public should check credentials before hiring a tree guy? It ain't gonna happen.

Send a copy of the invoice to ISA legal dept. They will followup with it. In order to use the CA in your paper advertising, which the invoice essentially is, the name and cert # must appear. I have recently turned in 2 guys trying the same thing.

Similar experience here; both orgs protect their trademarks.

Send him an email congratulating him on both counts, and ask when he got certified and became a member. Act surprised."

Brilliant! A good first step before/in lieu of reporting.

Except that if you do end up reporting, he'll know it was you....

As a side note, I hope he's not a buzzer because he'd know anyway...

Thanks Tom I am thinking of calling him tomorrow night. I do give him quite a bit of work when I need him for storm work, but I have another crew I can rely on now so probably will stop using him in that area.

Sorry tai tree, the 'straight-up' approach would incite defensiveness. You might respond to righteousness positively, but this guy has wrongness ingrained. He is not praying out loud to be set straight, so a light hand may be kinder, and more effective.

Fiction is okay sometimes. ;) Indirect communication can get through even better than direct, in-your-face style.

Danielson, staff tells me that reporting is kept anonymous to the cheat who gets reported on. I don't recall being outed when reporting, not that I would mind much.

At the heart of this, it's kinda stupid to skip out on TCIA dues or fail to get ISA CEUs. The expense is so small compared to other costs of doing business, and the benefits can be huge.

It's a tactic used to see if he will continue lying. If he is a good friend, I agree, he deserves better. However it's not up to every one of us to be the judge or jury or to fix everyone's problems. Even in the form of a phone call, asking or saying that you didn't realize he was certified is the exact same thing, just gets results faster.

In a way I agree, BUT, there's more than one way to drop a tree.
This isn't a comfortable situation for anyone. Best to encourage Deevo to do the right thing however he sees best.
