Re: BELAYED SPEED CLIMB 2010

No disrespect to the competitors but climbing a rope using Dbrt for extended periods during a speedclimb seems wrong to me - see the firstt 20 seconds of the 1st video to see what I mean.

A speedclimb in the purest sense is when a human being climbs the branched framework of a suitable tree whilst being belayed, at no point should the climber be using Dbrt. I reckon this idiotic tendency to include climbing the rope as part of the the event has to stop. Otherwise the event will cease to be relevant in any way shape or form to the actual ancient method of a human climbing a tree, which is when a human climbs a tree branch by branch using only their arms and legs.

Who can I write to about this? Colin Bashford?

Re: BELAYED SPEED CLIMB 2010

Funny I was thinking the same thing. Also what has this got to do with tree working techniques. Hats off to the competitors, my arms would still be smoking if I tried to keep up with that action. Awesome performances.

But really a removal competition would be more realistic. I'm sure this has been discussed every year for many years. If I had to rely on no spur work and consulting I'd be starving. Removals are our bread and butter so we can consult and prune as a side line. At least in the smaller markets. Or they could add the most compassionate tree hugging event.

WOW, 2 others that are starting to see the things I do. Good for you to see through the mist and spot the BS of a comp. Let us not forget alittle pat on the tushy could send you right past a climber that could make you look stupid on his day off.

what do you mean, you never body thrust ever? how could you have a removal comp? everyone would get a different tree? also a removal never really requires any real climbing. your always on spurs for one. thats a whole different ballgame and not all that fun to watch.a good speed climb is a beautiful thing, likewise a good footlock.

Really? Does it bother people that much that someone uses their rope (and their legs/tree branches) and a friction hitch (belayed) to ascend into a tree? This comp has quite a bit of history, and IMO it is progressing very well. It's a good topic for debate, but it doesn't seem like a a huge deal to me. It is a good test of strength, spped and skill IMO.

And no, you would not contact Colin, you would contact the ITCC Rules Committee.

Re: BELAYED SPEED CLIMB 2010

No Tom, I belayed speed climb, if you read the rules mean a point for evertime you touch the rope. Having set it so you need to touch the rope mean uuummm you suck as a set up person. The body thrust part of this was dished back in, what the early 90's. Otherwise the non footlockers would still have a venue to score.

Yo and who said we are allowed rock climbing shoes to do the footlock??? I thought this was supposed to be about what we have to work with. Am I supposed to lock up and ask for my work boots to put on Mark.

Your jokin right, cuase I know for fact, I can smoke more than some of the champs. I really don't care if banned or not, or what some say. I can run most the comp climbers in the ground and laugh while I ask for the next job. The reason I don't compete is the fact the ISA, I think it sucks donkey balls, I used to go to the NAA ones but the ISA can lick the &&&&. OOO By the way we me and a guy Craig Druman ( my mentor) used to kick the shoot out of Steve C. at Fleminton park , It was before Marks time think he was still learning the taughtline.

Where's Riggs, Mike is a spot on my boot, you sure you want me???

Re: BELAYED SPEED CLIMB 2010

I'm planning on entering my first comp this year. My chapter is calling it a Jamboree rather than a comp this year, sounds good to me. We'll see how it goes. Some of us are competitive and some are happy to compete with ourselves. That cheering in the background would cause me to want to go climb a tree in a different park for some peace and quiet. Sorry everyone is different. Don't doubt I'll let you all know if I kick 20 year old butt with no training or practice just daily work experience. Doubtful but it could be my lucky day, or not. I've got to make a cameo appearance as the cover boy on the Sherrill cataloge.

For a removal comp how about a conifer imitation with dowells inserted and a top pole clamped on to rig and drop. For a deciduous a couple lateral poles that need rigging. A little creativity could make it work. Or I don't know I've never even been a spectator at a comp.

Re: BELAYED SPEED CLIMB 2010

see, I never get to watch other people move through the trees except at a jamboree. I too am one that likes that term better because it connotes get together. The speed climb in all its different ways is a great way to watch other climbers do what they do as fast and as hard as they can. Its one of the best events. I too would like to see less rope pulling and more climbing but you take what the trees give you and not very many good tall trees can be climbed hand to tree, you'll not that the winners of the event really climbed the tree a lot more than the all rope pullers.

Well said.

On another note, Dennis Ryan, one of our old-school past presidents still calls it a Jamboree, despite the name change. That's why we love him.
