Not totally clear. Mrtree stated Malus which is the apple genus but that does not identify the tree. In order to correctly identify a tree you need not only a genus but a species as well. May be a species of crab apple. But difficult to establish from pictures.

I confirmed with my new wife that it is not a crab apple tree. Don't have any old leaves to go by, so only have bark, shape and buds to work with right now.

Look up an arborist in your area and he or she can confirm the species.

If you're disinclined to hire a local arborist to help you on site, your next best bet is to clip a branch off of the tree, with stems and buds, and take it to the horticulturist at your county cooperative extension for ID. I'd suggest calling before you go, to make certain that the horticulturist is in and available, before driving down, otherwise you may wind up talking to a master gardener.

It does not produce fruit, according to my wife. We are only weeks away from the tree leafing. I can wait that long to identify.
Are all apples not considered to be Malus pulia (syn. domestica)? This is pretty basic stuff. Using genus does not identify this tree. There are thousands of varieties of apples so that is the more correct identification.
We cannot ID by this picture alone but it is in the tip-bearing apple section.

I have a Forestry expert from the DNR coming to walk through the property, once the trees start leafing out. Forgot to mention that.

Depending on your location, it may just have taken a few years from bearing fruit. Where I am we just had a few crappy apple years, due to spring weather, pollinators, and pests... I am assuming that since you are asking this may be a new property to you and your wife?

New to me. My wife has been at the location for a number of years but not paid attention to what she has for trees. I want to know, so we can properly care for them.
