Is the Better Business Bureau worth the investment?

It's a bunch of garbage. From my understanding, you pay for a good rating, which could be a good thing if you are doing ethical work. However, there are some scumbag hackjobs around me that keep busy because of their BBB rating and uneducated customers.

I agree with TreeVB, however I do subscribe to the BBB. In the seven years I've been with them, being relatively cheap per year, I have actually gotten a pretty high return. So therefore, I continue.

Here's a tip for this kind of thing--make absolutely sure your profile has an clickable online link to your website (same applies if you do any sponsoring on public radio, ads in newspapers that are online, etc.) BBB listing might end up being worth it by driving traffic to your business this way.

@thrashattack The clickable link that @DruidCarol mentions not only drives traffic, but as I understand it, it makes your website more visible to the search engines which can possibly increase your seo and lead to better rankings.
