Is splicing tape worth it?

I've heard that Marlow splicing tape is thinner, slicker, and more flexible than other tape (like vinyl electrical tape). The few places I've found it for sale want more for shipping than the cost of two rolls of tape. Is it really the bees knees for splicing or is vinyl tape nearly as good?

I used masking tape, but that could wrinkle and slow things down with the ridges. Went to transparent tape as a substitute for the expensive splicing tape, it works better, but can also wrinkle. Now using clear tape from the dollar store, you get six rolls. Not real sticky, but that helps when you have to remove it.
