Impressions of the Teufelberger Platinum

So far I like it! Low stretch, although not as low as Sterling HTP, but way less than KMIII and all other climbing lines. The rope has almost no memory, meaning that when a knot is tied you don't get any weird kinking after, like with some other static lines, and after it is weighted it doesn't become stiff and difficult to coil.
My two climbs on it have been one on the RW and one with just mechanical grabs. Mechanical devices flow through it effortlessly and the pantin starts to tail itself 3 feet off the ground. Hitches run very nicely on it, but at 10mm it is too skinny in my opinion to be used for a working SRT line, my hands were very fatigued after one climb.
Priced at about $1.21 per foot makes this rope a bit too expensive for my blood when buying 300 feet of rope.
One concern that I have with the 'core' of this rope is the Aramid fibers in the middle, but it does have HMPE and Polyolefin in the core as well, so perhaps the Aramid isn't that big of a deal. The interlocking core design is a stroke of genius!
When I ran a hitch over it there was ZERO sheath slippage. I anticipate this will be a long lasting rope because of this fact. I hope more manufacturers will begin to experiment with this technology.

Things that I think would make it better: hi vis colours! larger diameter! A sexy slice from Teufelberger! Lowered cost!

Bottom line: It is worth a look. But my go to static line will still be HTP.

I work with 10mm HTP daily for several months now and no problems with hand fatigue. I rarely if ever climb hand over hand up the rope though. Platinum looks promising.

Thanks Waldo,
I have been eying that rope now for a bit. isn't there 2 types of the platinum rope? with different materials in the construction or something? I may be mis remembering something.

I hear all gear is coming out with a white gold rope thats almost as good :)

I'm really liking Platinum for access at this point (Foot locking, static ascent, etc...). It hits that sweet spot between KMIII and Escalator, but with a new cover/core technology. The weave pattern is cool looking as you can see the core becoming more and more part of the cover, and then less and less over every couple feet. When you study the pattern, it helps to understand just how complex this rope is to manufacture.

I ran it with the RW with a very supple 8mm hitch, but didn't feel very good about the hitch response on it. My impression is that it's not ideal for SRWP, like most static lines. In fact, the only kernmantle line that worked for me in a SRWP application so far is Fly, which is much closer to a DB. I only raise this point since the construction of Platinum is unlike any other rope.

Mechanicals are great on this line, and toothed cams run/feed very nicely over it.

Platinum is very lightweight, and after adding the hank to my gear bag, I could barely notice the difference. This is great at the upper ends of a foot lock ascent, and the supple nature of the line is nice as the doubled line stays together easily for predictable locks.

I REALLY hope NE Ropes can get this manufactured in the states, as I think it would bring the cost down quite a bit.

yep, what Eric says ;) might be a good FLing rope, but I never footlock anymore.

I just looked at the specs from teufelberger's website and compared to tree stuff. It appears tree stuff has made a mistake on their specs for the rope, the same specs I was renfering to, oops. Still want to see how it feels foot locking.

I just footlocked on it today, HOLY COW! I had to look down at my feet to make sure there weren't vice grips on my shoes! Super nice to lock on, easy feeling on the hands, and it shaved like 5 seconds off my time :)

Not too bad to the bare hands either, right? I could deal with a slight bit more in diameter, but I was surprised at how well I could grab such a narrow line...doubled, of course.
