I'm shocked!

I can see how this situation would be frustrating Cameron. It does sound like miscommunication.

I worked for Cameron after the storm so I will say some positive things for the party in question. He is a hard working guy and a very good albeit young certified crane operator. Fluently bilingual which is very valuable. I couldn't believe how well he spoke Spanish. Was at the shop before 7 every day and often was doing estimates in the dark on his way home.

Hope you guys work out the kinks.

It's not like I'm ready to fire the guy or anything. He does have a lot of positive things going for him at this company. We did work it out, and he appologized for the miscomunication, as well as I did. But it was all in writing.

He said he was greatful for the bonus. Just left me feeling a little sour handing him five grand even though he deserved it. I wanted that good feeling on my part handing him double what he thought he was getting. Maybe I'm just getting old and grumpy.

Storms will do that to you.

Re: I\'m shocked!

Cameron, I'm confused. You established a target which he achieved thus earning the bonus set forth in his contract. To show your appreciation for his performance you double this. You go on to say well he didn't really earn it since there was storm work, walk up and leads. Then you say he did deserve it. ummmmmmmmm, was the quota limited to the business he generated from cold calls and his own marketing? If not then where the work came from is of little consequence.

Many sales people work only from leads provided and have bonuses paid based on that. That is how their job was defined. Maybe you need to better define the bonus structure in the contract so there is no misunderstanding going forward. Remember you didn't give him double what he thought he was getting, it was far less than what he expected based on his read of the contract. As for the rest of the comp package that has nothing to do with the bonus. Whether he hit his target or not that all was provided for and as it is he worked in other capacities to merit such pay. So, if you think about the production work he did plus the sales then it's pretty fair to say he was really work 2 jobs.

I wonder if you have stopped to figure out how many of those storm jobs you wouldn't have got to if you were the only person handling the calls? How many of those leads would have gone cold waiting for you to get to them? Your disappointment in his response stems from your misunderstanding of the situation. Sit down with him apologize and move on to setting next years goals and reviewing the contract and amending it if necessary to be sure everyone is on the same page and producing the results desired.

Good luck!
