Ice Tail loop

Sorry if this has been posted before... I wasn't able to find any info on it:

I'm wanting to splice a prusik loop with a captive ring out of Ice Tail for an adjustable ring & ring friction saver. Looking at Samson's splicing instructions I see that Ice Tail is a Class 2 12 strand splice, which makes for a very long bury (7 fid lengths extra rope needed), and therefore a huge prusik loop.

Although it's not in my Samson splicing manual, I've noticed online that they have Class 2 Tuck-and-bury end-for-end splice instructions online. I've not tried this type of splice before, but sounds like it might be what I'm looking for. Has anyone tried this splice? Is it a good way to go for this application? I feel like the constant friction in different directions involved in setting and using a prusik loop might serve to untuck the braids over time.

What have other people used for splicing Ice Tail loops?

Thanks,

Jason

I've used the the shortest possible eye and eye length with a single ring in both eyes. It works/looks good as a three wrap (six loop) prussic but it was a pain to finish with the ring captured in both eyes.

I've used Tenex TEC for similar splices before. My idea was in this scenario, if the prusik loop became forced against the running rope in the ring, it would be less likely to become severely glazed or melted. I know I should be inspecting for such things before using the system each time, but I like the idea of adding redundant safety measures wherever possible. Can Ice Tail be spliced into a reasonably short loop?

I feel like the ice tail loop would be pretty stiff. It's been a while since I spliced any but with the length of the bury I think it will be tight and stiff. I could be wrong though since I've only made eye 2 eyes. Keep us posted on how it works out!

Okay, good call on sticking with technora rope here. A spliced loop will be quite stiff. But I have made icetail eye-eyes where the tails ran the full length of the sling making them about 7/16" in diameter and they would still hold a prusik. Honestly, you're not going to be out that much $ if you just make it and see if does what you want it to do.

This might be a good time to have ABR stitch one for you!

Good call on the stitching, I should have thought of that before ordering 25' of Ice Tail...

I'm not so worried about the stiffness... it will be backed up with a butterfly knot anyway and I'm sure it will be fine once it's set (my friction savers are Arbormaster so there is plenty of size difference).

I'm more just wondering if I can get away with a shorter loop than what I would need to have with the long class 2 bury.
