I got a great job offer and I'm second guessing myself.

But you could have made a buck!
I happily earn a comfortable living without being a hatchet man. I'm typically hired as a subject matter expert who happens to be a fair hand at how to plant, prune and remove trees. I also charge a consultation fee before I'll set foot on a new prospects site, unless they already have very well written specification for the work. (They never do.) That fee enables me to provide objective information and options without putting my thumbs on the scale, and further allows me to gently redirect clients by giving them more information upon which to base their decisions.

I seem to be painfully behind in my education. I will be doing some heavy reading this week for sure, as I have an important client this Saturday and would like to be as well equipped with information before going into his spectacular trees.

Can I trouble y'all for your favorite links for learning?

You won't know how it works out until you give it a try. I think some anxiety / nervousness about making the switch to a new company with new crew is entirely normal. The key though is being able to dial those anxious thoughts back enough so that it doesn't consume you, and also doesn't interfere with your performance if you do in fact do a trial run with the new company. You know the work and processes, it's just a new environment with new people. But hey, every tree job is a new environment with a new customer right?

I think knowing what kind of arborist you want to be and what kind of work you want to do is a great thing. Some people do a little of everything, and some may want to focus more on something specific. When you know what you want, go for it.

I went with the new operation, and it has been awesome. An ideal fit for me in every way, and the boss is throwing me referrals for side gigs that are literally just work for a single climber with no cleanup! He makes sure that I am getting the hours I want each week, and is clearly super cool with us taking time off if we need to. It feels surreal.
