I cut part of the backcut, then bore into the tree three times, once below the back cut and twice vertically, to remove a "trivial pursuit pie piece". this is where I put the jack, fully compressed. then I cut the face. Then slip the bar back into the backcut from the side (closer to the hinge than the jack) and keep cutting while adding additional lift.

I'd thought about the steel plate on the top of the jack, though I think that as the tree tips, the plate will need to tip with the tree or risk sliding out. The bottle jack head compresses into the top of the backcut a little bit, locking it into place more. If for some reason you really need to jack it up a long way, it may slip as well.

The steel plate really helps for softer species.

Make a slight angle on the bottom of the hole that you cut for the jack. This helps the jack from slipping as the tree lifts.

Hey MB and familytree, I'm sure tophopper appreciates the defense; but jim and top are friends... just givin' each other a hard time. Probably a few drinks in'em too! Douchebags that they are!

I feel as though I need to explain myself, remember back in the days hops when your back was giving you trouble ? you used to take aspirins right and aspirins are pills right and you pop em right in your mouth now don't you .Hence the name pill popper!!! Sorry for the misunderstanding,Can we still be friends? And another thing I do agree, the chainsaw crack was totally uncalled for.

And I taught both of you to climb...hahaha! Actually, I've learned a lot from both of these guys.

Remember that harness I sold you Top? With those huge ladder hooks welded on both sides? What a load of weight that was

Actually Tom you only loaned me that saddle. It was a buddy of yours and you made me call him to ask permission to use it. And yes it was a beauty for sure.
The first saddle I ever bought was from Jimbo. A 4 d weaver I think. Red and white. Remember that Jim? I actually wish I still had that saddle. I cut my teeth in that saddle.

Aren't you sneaky.... going back and changing your post.
Yep with "friends" like Treeco, who needs enemies?

What I've been using for years since 1975 when I bought it on my Birthday along with a cable winch attachment for my chain saw. Another story.

The lil feller can produce 28 tons of pressure. I always use wedges along with the jack. You manage the pressure better. Its not all on the jack to do the lifting.

Some good reference material in both the "Fundementals of General Tree Work" G.F. Beranek and also in "Professional Timber Falling a Procedure Approach" by D.Douglas Dent.

I also find the jack useful when I get my chain saw stuck in a cut when bucking up a fallen log. Just a little boost and your free.

Looks like the top plate can tilt a little to stay flush with the butt as the tree is lifted.
