hurricane relief work..PAY ME!

Hi guys and gals, I'm back. Can you believe that company I sub-contracted under for hurricane IKE clean up in Houston, Texas still hasn't paid me in full? They sent me a 1099 for the total amount but still owe a significant amount. What advise do you have for me? FDR still owes me just under $2000.

I still am owed money from Katrina so what they owe me from Ike is like new money. Doing storm work is not any good anymore. Things we were paid $5o for 3 years ago they want to pay $3 for now. What they say they will pay you is one thing and getting the money is another. Good luck

They claimed they paid you, at least that's the essence of the 1099.

I'd call the IRS.

What's going to be real interesting is when next season, another Cat 3 or more storm hits some population and what anyone will be able to do afterwards. "Good job Brownie".

The IRS said they were only interested in criminal CPA type fraud. They directed me to a site to download forms. Like doing business with the devil. To sue would cost 1000 down. The guy that owes me lives in Florida (on his card) but his business is in Alabama with 2 other disaster recover crooks...I mean companies.

Cahaba has a pretty decent rep. You've got to get on the phone and find out what companies have been paid. Cahaba must have been the Prime contractor, if they paid Florida Disaster then you have to chase your money down from Florida Disaster. We are all kinda on our own it seems when it comes time to collect.
Fema hasn't paid out all the moneys on some projects for some reason, maybe your's was one of them.

Right though, the idea of humane assistance and outright storm work meshing together is someone's pipe dream. One or the other, not both.

But this thing about not being paid yet at least one contractor hides some money by claiming they did pay you...that's fraud.

Is it your retainage they are still holding? Usually the 10% retainage is held out until the prime is paid in full, typically 6 mos or more. Very often subs do not get the retainage at all for one reason or another. I've basically deduct that right off the top when i get into one of these gigs. If you get it in the long run kudos but never count on it.

2k is pretty small change when it comes to contract storm work, i doubt you'll get much attention trying to get that. But if you care to try, I would go straight to the top, City Hall. There are performance bonds put into place for this very reason; to make sure subs are paid.
Last thing; I don't think going to the media is gonna get you anywhere...prob just piss some people off and you'll wind up burning bridges all over a small amount of cash..

Just my 2 cents.

i worked around houston for the month of october. got screwed out of about two thousand dollars too. I took the word of a guy who appeared to have a good reputation. nothing signed just a handshake.

I'll bet those guys are still laughing at me. The lesson I learned is that when someone says "Dont worry, we would never screw you" your going to get screwed. that ended my storm chasing career very quickly I must say.

Also, watch out for guys who drive 90,000 dollar trucks with all the bells and whistles but complain about being broke all the time.

Lots of people out there working the system with no souls, just dollars in their eyes.

the one good thing that came out of that month from hell is I climbed some awesome trees and came up with the F8/revolver climbing technique which has been serving me well ever since.

At least you found some positive parts to an ugly whole.

Storm work has changed, like many of the things we used to bank on. When I was young, the social make-up of towns was the Buick was the car the Lawyer drove, Oldsmobile for the Doctor, Chevies and Fords for the working class and one (1) Cadillac for the Banker. A Mercedes or BMW was an exotic fluke, passing thru and not stopping to eat at the bar and grill.

Now we got some punk kid in a $60,000 pick-up??

Awhile back, a thread on "presentation" lavished praise on how we think our customers tilted towards the image of success. Success has become the Bernie Madoffs, experience in working relationships with this image has been a dissappointment, times ten.

Maybe now or in the imminent future, things will stabilize again...for the better. People will have to rely on themselves and time-honored skills, not passing fancies and pathological imagry. It's about time and too bad it takes a complete implosion to change it, but we're decades overdue.

A Catagory 4 or more this coming season on a city or two, well hello Mogadishu and the powerful will be the Technicals, with .50's on board.

the experience was sureal to me. i felt like I was in Steinbecks grapes of wrath. so many people displaced from their homes looking for quick money. Lonely men with lots of problems. I dont really feel any bitterness about it anymore. It was eye opening and changed my perspective on the world. i saw a darker side to people and a great disfunction in our society in general. I also have to say that I worked with some great people too. Sad people but good people that were also getting lied to.

I was paid, just not what I was told I would get paid. I realized the extent to which people lie when they are desperate. I feel sorry for the people that lied to me because I see that they are on a downward spiral and grasping at anything to save themselves from their own self-destruction. They used me not out of malice personally to me but out of desperate self preservation. Just another class in the school of hard knocks.
