How much wood can you split?

[ QUOTE ]
Here's a nice trick to splitting more wood buy hand. Find a trucker with an extra tire, or an import with a 20"+ rim. No reaching down to pick up the fallen rounds.

I just learned this tecnhique this winter. Boy is it handy.

But, I'm able to split 3 cords in less than an 8 hour day on a single way splitter. With that said, I'll have my wood bucked up and 2 or 3 of my young boys staging logs by my side. This includes many small breaks (for the kids).

For the topic of splitting by hand and not wanting the logs to fly all over the place... a chain & bungie cord can work better. The reason why is you can easily carry your bundled wood to the pile. And if one would like to put twine on the bundle, it's already contained.

That video is under 1 minute. It's worth seeing.

someone should have picked on me about my excuses before I started, "it's winter, I'm out of shape, got a torn membrane in my shoulder"... bla bla bla. Just in case i was too slow.

Not to mention at that pace you'd probably last another five minutes before you croaked.

There, see Tom knows it.

I'd do it on video just to show you all day at that pace, but 10 minutes is all that is allowed on youtube, so I guess i can't.

At the Paul Bunyan Days Logging Show here in Ft. Bragg there was a wood splitting contest event. 4 man team to cut, split and stack a cord. It's been some time, but I am pretty sure it was around 6 minutes for the best team.

Wood was donated to the senior's center.

Oh, and each piece of wood had to go through a 6 inch diameter hole to qualify.

fun to watch

yes, those splitting wheels are VERY scary.

I don't think i would care for the tire or bungee method either.

I farted around with the bungie method... I cut one within a minute.

But, you gotta try the tire trick. It's awesome. You don't have to chase down logs to rebalance them, to resplit.

It really helps for making nice kindling fast.

Try it David.
