For several years a few buddies would head up to Hayward Wisconsin for the Lumberjack Championships. The first year was the started off on the right foot. Jimmy and I had worked most of Saturday and headed straight home to get camping gear and drive to Hayward. Jimmy had been building up the whole street party part of the festivities. Two and a half hours after leaving Minneapolis we drive down mainstreet Hayward. The town is abandoned. Huh...Didn't seem right for a Saturday night. We walked into a bar where there were no more than ten people and asked where everyone was. The barkeep and anyone within earshot looked at us...Whaddya mean? We thought there would be more people up for the Lumberjack Championships. One guy at the bar choked on his beer and the barkeep smiled....

That's next weekend!

We came up the next weekend again :)

Here's a pic of two of the hotsaws in July of 1976. I can still remember seeing Ron Hartell competing. He had such a good spirit about him. It's been fun spending time with him at the arbo shows. He was a world champ for several years and always was a crowd favorite.
