Homemade piano wire splice wand?

Any pics of your homemade setup? I've been using toss's wand for several years, but have been wanting to make a wire splice wand for those tighter weaves. Photos of how you set it up would be helpful.

Is this the type of thing you're looking for?

Wire coat hanger works the same for bigger stuff. But, it's hard to beat the Toss Wand.

When you make the bend at the top of the fid, instead of bending it by hand or with pliers, drive a nail into a sturdy piece of wood and pull both ends of the wire over it to form a nice even rounded point.

Pictures people! I have one made but I'm not proud enough to show it. It's piano wire and a broken wooden hammer handle. I sanded it a little bit nothing of great workmanship. After my vacation I'll take a few of my ghetto beast.

Mine is a coat hanger with a large steel ring in the one side that i picked up from the hardware store for 90 cents or something like that. I will take a picture of it when i can

Not pretty but it works I would like it a bit longer but that's for next time.

Here's some pics of what we use.......

Some of the things we look for in a good wire fid are:
- Smooth handle edges...splicing can be tough on the hands, don't make it worse!
- Custom length fid for the piece you're making.
- Simple attachment method for pulling splices home on an anchor.
- Smooth radius at the tip with NO burrs to catch fibers. Sometimes we use fine sandpaper to clean up the wires and a bit of olive oil to keep them slippery.

There are so many cool tips and tricks to make this work easier and more consistent... I've learned so much from working with other splicers... Just like climbing, we've all got something to teach and learn from each other...the trick is taking the time and effort to really listen.

Something to note in the pictures is the use of the 17 GA wire that you can get at just about any hardware store (I use 14 GA which is easier to push and not as sharp on the end). Thinner than a coat hanger, strong and stiff enough, cheap and any length you need. No need to rob a piano tuner...
