Home birthing hippies

My wife wanted a home water birth. The baby was very late, not freak out late, but just taking his sweet time. Our midwife informed her that if she drank some castor oil it could bring labor on if she was with in a few days, and if not well she would be cleaned out. We were on the verge of having to receive some invasive testing. (I cannot remember the name but the little pig tail wire screwed in to the baby's head, but some other things before that.) We didn't even have an ultrasound for the baby so were adverse to such things. So she opted to try the castor oil, and holy crap did it work in every way. Labor came on quick and regular, and I was making the calls within a hour of the first contraction. Everything seemed to progress very quickly, but the dilation stalled out. Our midwife tried every trick in the book over the course of the next two days (yes two freakin days!), and one of the last tricks was manually breaking the water.
There was a little meconium in the amniotic fluid, which can be a sign of distress. Under the midwifery laws here it meant a trip to the hospital. This was late afternoon day 2. After checking in, and introductions to the nurses, the doctor was just a fly on the wall. The doc was cool with all of our wishes, and suggested Pitocin since the contractions were now even slower and weaker. Then also a weak epidural. We all got about an hour or two of sleep, before the sun rise. Then it was on, full tilt the morning of day 3. The doctor was literally sitting watching the midwife do her thing, and just checking in every now and then. That was 7 years ago this March, and that's how our son introduced himself. (he still takes his sweet ass time)

I actually wanted a water birth at this resort in Russia where dolphins move in and act as doulas during the birthing! Rather rare and expensive these days. Even looked at renting a birthing pool for our living room, could not find any dolphins though.

We really wanted a home birth at first, but our doula convinced us not to. Only because we were so far from a birthing center/ hospital of our liking, if some thing did happened. Which she had been part of before.

Our doula is a friend and fellow ski patroller, she said she stopped counting the births at 100.

Both kids, 18months and 4 now, were on time all natural. Second one was like two hours of contractions, minutes of pushing. My wife credits the acupuncture to pulling the trigger, on time ..? I credit all the sperm I gave her daily to ripen the cervix, as recommended by our doula! Both labors, the acupuncture guy told my wife when to pack her bags. Our doula who recommended him, said she has never seen a late delivery for those who have done the acupuncture during pregnancy.

When my wife was first pregnant and did not want to tell her family, we were on a vacation trip with her family and a dolphin cruised upside our boat and eyeballed my wife. The captain of the boat said, somebody must be pregnant. He then went into stories about people falling overboard and the dolphins circling to protect the pregnant women. She broke the news that night.

Ina May? Time to research. Which means ask my wife.
Ina May Garten: pioneered the natural birth/homebirth movement in the 70's. In many states it wasn't legal to have a homebirth or for the midwife to deliver the baby without a doctor's license.

She is still alive and at the forefront of the movement. Big hippy, but fighting for freedom of choice in this issue. Homebirth still illegal in the state of NC; not sure of which other states.

How did I acquire this info--I did my research, ie. I asked my wife :descansando:

I cross referenced your facts...Yup, our wives agree. However, she had no idea about the dolphin doula. She flipped

The midwife we had with our daughter was such a rock star. She gave birth to one of her kids at a friends apartment in NYC when it was still illegal to home birth in that state. With just another midwife there. She also worked for years at a birthing center that provided for underprivileged women right on the border with Mexico. She basically didn't sleep for like five years. She was caaaaaalllllmm

That some video frash. I enjoyed my wife's expressions while she watched it. Haha

I don't know if I said it before, the unassisted thing is fucking tremendous. So cool. Even my wife was like "daaaaaaaaaaaammmnn"

This may count as bragging, but I'm only reporting that my wife's response was, " it's not really that big of a deal."

Right, Sweetie, that's why I avoided the subject for 9 months because it was no biggie. Please forgive her; she belongs to too many unassisted Facebook groups and has forgotten the insanity. Sort of like tree climbers...

Mac, your midwife sounds like a real rebel-->:burlas: No derail, but I wonder how many people out there didn't have health care in '14, and are going to refuse to pay their "shared responsibility"?:envidioso

We were hoping to have our first at our new home, however I did not have our house finished in time. We did go to a birth center and my wife had a water birth with no epidural. It was amazing for me to see what her body was capable of doing; she went into a trance like state for the pushing faze. I highly recommend midwives and home births for low risk births. You get better care than a normal hospital birth and pay less money for it. There is a lot less stress involved if you just stay at home for it.
