Holy Crap, Ninja Ice Are The Best $8 Gloves

Second the hand warmers. I also run a pair of rubber first aid style gloves under the Atlas gloves. Keeps the hands dry and warm, works as a vapour barrier.
The Atlas gloves don't just slide right off? Sounds like a good idea. Wouldn't lose much more dexterity that way either.

Tried out the Ninja Ice gloves working outside on the ground for a couple days 0-5° f hands still get cold but with wool mittens over them, toasty. Can't expect miracles. They are very comfortable and looks like they'll be pretty good for climbing 15° f and above.

How are they at gripping small snow plow parts at 0° :coffe:

Did you happen to test that?

Excellent! Yes, fun couple of days. Nothing like lying on the ground working on equipment in the winter. I thought I was done with all that! Last time was replacing a muffler on Toyota pickup trick 1976 upstate NY, 5° at the time, but no humidity so comfy enough ;-)

One trick to help keep the hands warm regardless of what gloves you're using is to keep a second pair under your coat up against your chest. When you start to feel your hands getting cold, switch them.

I've been using this trick with my leather (ground) gloves when I get out of the tree. I hadn't thought about it with the climbing gloves -- I have to get another pair for it to work. :loco:

Thanks for the idea!

Finally climbed with the Ninja Ice gloves, was in the mid twenties f. So not a great test but my fingers stayed warm. Rope grip is not as good as the Atlas gloves but a fair trade off to stay warm.

The brand is RadTex, the palm and finger material is a soft deerskin. They are warm but big and clumsy in a tree with reduced grippiness. It helps that they stay more pliable than standard leather, no idea how they wear out with production use.

The deerskin is supposed to be waterproof and protective, there is some disagreement on the "protective" part, from the deer...

Rad Tex Model # ?

Found them. They are made by Rugged Wear.

And RAO Tex (not Rad Tex like I thought) is a component. It looks like I got them at Menards -

There is a mitten version as well -

I like these gloves when I am running my snow plow because the wrist tie keeps the wind out. Leather is not the grippiest for rope but it keeps the fingers from turning blue.

If you can get a large knit wool mitten with leather palm sewed on and put it over the the Ninja Ice your hands will be in an oven. Use an untethered handled ascender for rope grip ascending. Hang the mittens on your harness when you need finer dexterity or stronger rope grip. I'm finding the Ninja's don't grip as well as I'd like so I'm using a handled ascender over my wrench or runner anyway.
