I think these maybe get too much water but mostly they have had too large of stems removed that didn’t heal over and those become rotten and hollow, often down into the trunk. That being said, the percentage of hollow was small, but still significant. Almost all of them broke on impact in some way. Pretty cottonwood-like imo.

Did y'all get the symbolism of the colors I chose for the ruler scale" YMMV but I guessed 3" shell or less = oh crap, 6" of shell to 3" = considerable concern and 9" to 6" of shell = still to be taken into consideration sometimes. Also 3" is a distance easy to rough out 1" estimations from by eye to get non-3,6,9 values easily.

Depends on diameter. 18" tree: 3" doesn't worry me too me without other indicators. 6" on a 54" tree is a little concerning....but not really an "oh no!" situation.

ATH, understood, a drill bit could even be nominally sized for trunk diameter. This was just a first kick at thresholds which aren't hard numbers anyway. The "alarm" scale is in the operator's head with the colors a general guide eg 1/2 way thru red yup its thin. Buried all the yellow probably all's good - yeah unless it's a 6' dbh tree. etc

I thought it was a kind of cool eureka moment. Maybe it's already on the market.(?) DIY certainly has my blessing.
