hitch compairison

im experimenting with hitch's so far im all about the michocaun wit an eye to eye, pulley and extender (thanks to an earlier thread) the advantage i find in the michocaun is the self dressing and never having to worry about easing into your saddle. what do you guys climb on and what advantages do you see in your hitch?.

I am using the safety blue (1/2 inch line) with the core removed, tie termination knots on each end, and tie a Valdotain. (6 wraps, straight up)

It's fast on the draw, and easy to grab hold of, and when you burn out of a tree too fast, it's no problem to make a new one.

I am using Hi-Vee 1/2" line with a hitchclimber pulley/VT (4 wraps, 3 crossover wraps) using HRC. I was using Tenex, but it was kinda floppy and slippery... I am still getting used to the size change with the HRC, but I absolutely love the way it responds based on its stiffness and texture.

I use a Petzl Pantin foot ascender on DdRT, which probably sounds weak to the SRT climbers, but it's safe and pretty easy to get myself up a tree.

I want you to be sure that I am talking about my hitch, not my climbing line. I climb on Tachyon. I'll try to get a picture for you. I learned it from KYLimbwalker.

haha ya ok i was like wow this guys lost his marbles hey tom the thing i dont like about the vt is you have to ease into your saddle and make sure your hitch is dressed or it will slip with the michocaun it self dresses

Mike, my VT doesn't slip... I'm about 180 lbs and I take four wraps and then three alternating over-under wraps, and it grabs just fine. The Tenex did not always grab immediately, but the HRC does. I think it really depends on the rope combination.

The other thing I have been doing with this setup is leaving the hitch on the rope after use, even in storage. When I am ready to head up again, I slide it to where it needs to be for my ascent once I have it set in the tree. This isn't for all applications, but it has been working with my ascent system pretty well.

The VT is a great knot but takes a lot of time experimenting to find that elusive sweet spot, i always used to dress mine very tight with a 4/1 with the top braid always going over the bottom braid rather than alternate, as I climbed this would ease off to 3 wraps 2 braids, fine for my weight and rope hitch combo.
Also the reason for tieing it tight was to allow the scafold/fishermans?? knots to bed in as they will always creep a bit potentially making the VT you just set perfectly err un-perfect.

Now though i'm climbing on a knute using stiff 10mm ocean cord on Tachyon, what i like about this set-up is its not so fussy/tempremental. Although like any of these hitches they need to be adjusted and dialed in to work for your weight, rope, hitch cord, natural crotch or pulley friction saver la la la. basically what works for one may not work for another.
Back to why i like the knute, I can set the legs of the hitch short reducing sit back to a minimum for a nice positive action, its always easy to advance (especially with 10mm cord on 11.5mm line its just not so bitey) and the 10mm cord on skinny line just doesn't seem to burn my fingers on quick rapid movements in the crown.

I've never looked back since trying the knut. absolutly love it! I use bee-line on tachyon (lava). Never really thought about how similar the michoachan and knut are, and I've only tried the michaocan a few times. They both have a really "hot" spot like the blake and that's why I stay away from tenex.
