hickory tree removal

So a customer sends me an e-mail this morning. Her son is deathly allergic to peanuts, and is allergic to nuts in general. She said that she just realized she has a hickory tree in her front yard by where her son waits for the bus in the morning. She is afraid that he will get sick from the tree or something of that nature. I told her that they have been in the house for over a year already and he has had no problems to date, so we should leave the tree.

Are you guys approached often about peoples' allergies in regards to trees?

I had a customer a couple years ago wanting to take out a pecan because she was afraid her little dog would eat the shells and cut up the dogs insides and therefore die.

I told her I didnt think that would happen and she claimed it happened to a friend of hers. I therefore gave her a price and never heard from her again. Im not sure if the tree is still there or not.

As for people, another gal wanted a sycamore out claiming allergies...funny thing was there are about 6 across the street from her house. That tree is still there too.

Any allergist could tell her that peanut allergies are due to aflatoxins and that hickories are a totally different family of plant.

Supplying a little info can help people by curbing their hysteria. Then while they are in a grateful mood they may be receptive to PHC, to keep their plants more healthy and valuable.

Advise her to call her son's allergist to confirm Guymayor assertion (by the way....great post Guy, I never new).

If the allergist confirms this and puts her fears to rest then try and hit them up for, as guy said, PHC or pruning.

DO NOT OFFER OPINIONS ON HUMAN HEALTH ISSUES UNLESS YOU ARE A DOCTOR. IF THAT CHILD DIES BECAUSE OF YOUR ASSERTION THEN THEY WILL BE COMING AFTER YOU! /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well, the trees lost... and I guess I did too. I got the job, taking down the trees. There are SEVERAL hickories on the property which need to go... they only noticed them over the last few days. I think she is being paranoid, but what do I know?

They haven't consulted an allergist. I was kind of stunned that they wanted all the hickory trees down. I mean we were going and pruning trees, doing vertical mulching, cambistat applications and all that to save stressed trees. Now she wants all the hickories down because she is afraid for her son's life.

Hickory trees in general are very slow growers. The folks have only been in the house for a year yet the boy is already in school, so that tells me that they do not have a history of staying in one place for very long. They want to cut down the trees which likely have been there a good 15 years already. Do they plan to stay there that long so as to be able to "properly" replace the trees?

Forget all that part of the argument. Have the lady take a couple of hickory nuts (any kind) and just try to get at the meat. Seriously, she doesn't have to worry in the least that her son will inadvertently come into contact with the "dangerous" part of the nuts. The worst precaution they should have to worry about is to bag the clippings when they mow the lawn under the trees.

Can you tell us what type of hickories they are, what size/age they are, and post some pics of them? Can you possibly talk her out of removing them?

I agree with you all but put your self in her shioes and remember that when aproaching. Her child is # 1. Let her first know your findings, I also agree not to offer medical advice unless its for a tree.
