Heres what happens when a pulley is shockloaded.

Re: Heres what happens when a pulley is shockloade

Resize the picture with a photo editor (like Gimp or photoshop) Ranger.

Photoshop has a very clever "save for web" option.
This enables you to resize the picture and it optimizes for computer screen viewing.

Re: Heres what happens when a pulley is shockloade

My favorite of the Micro$oft Free PowerToys fer Windows is the image resizer. Once installed; you can right click pictures and resize to a 3 different preset sizes (except .gifs); or any size in the advanced mode-without opening any software. You can do group resizes too.

If using one of the mentioned softwares to open and resize pictures; you can also 'degrade' them to lower resolution. Doing so to 70% from 100% probably won't make much quality differance on the net (especially when shrinking pictures too); as it of curse would for printed materials.

MS-Paint that is automatically installed with Windows will also resize pictures; but you can't pick the resolution quality (which i believe is pre-set to 80%; thus you wouldn't want to edit the same pic twice; all ways keep a 'proof' copy to start from).

All this will give not only more viewable window sizes for pictures; but also faster download times; especially for dial'em ups.

Hmm. When I make a link to the specific rigging blocks at Sherrill, the link doesn't work like normal.

Anyway, blocks are more appropriate for big stuff. But, I am sure you understand that now.

I'll let others here point out other things in the rigging system that are to be avoided.

Any takers?

Re: Heres what happens when a BBS is shockloaded.

what an odd deal. i dont know what to think...
first the harness question, then the ascender question, then this bizarre pic of a destroyed pulley and a hardware store threaded link...
the biggest suggestion I have from looking at the pictures is: homeslice needs some safety glasses.

Re: Heres what happens when a BBS is shockloaded.

I bet the screw link was not screwed together. If it had been it would have deformed the side plates on that cmi pulley. The screw link also would have shown some damage other than just being bent.

It still is not a pulley to drop large loads onto but from what I'm seeing this failure is due to operator error.

Here is the photo fished from the previous postings!

Re: Heres what happens when a BBS is shockloaded.

Looks to me like the quick link wasn't closed properly. No apparent damage to the threads. When it bent open, the beveled end caught and held one of the sideplates. The weighted rope then hung on the opposite plate causing the pulley failure....... just a guess.

P.S. Are you certain of the rating on that pulley? 16,000 lbs. each side, total MBS 32,000??? Or 16,000 total?

Arrgh, you beat me to it Tree Co. Can't type fast enough.

Re: Heres what happens when a BBS is shockloaded.

I got the photo in, too!

That pulley is rated at 16,000 MBS total.

I agree with your analysis of the failure.

Re: Heres what happens when a BBS is shockloaded.

Yeah, we know thst now lol. It wasn't a large drop, and the wood was under the load ratings. It was just the too many wraps that locked the rope, we were just going to drop it straight down and slow the decsent. And as for the screw link, no idea. The climber in the pictures is not real good and dosen't understand the concepts involved with tree work. My Dad was going to do a speedline a week ago, but when he showed the climber how to set it up, he said thats stupid, and only what us americans do. (His hispanic) I told my Dad put him on the ground and let him haul the brush to where the speedline would carry it and show him how much less work it was. I'll post some more pictures on Thursday, when we go do a storm damage job. The tree was hit by lightning 7 years ago and one of the two leaders broke away. We're taking down the rest of the tree and damage on Thursday, since my Dad already when't there once last week.

Welome rangerdanger.

Realize that a falling log can easily generate a force that is 4 to 6 and even 10 times the log's own weight on the rope, and twice that amount on the block (here a pulley), connector, and sling.
