Help understanding advantage

As for how to use the hitches, check out a couple of YouTube videos of climbing with a Blake's hitch. That would be the easiest way to explain how to use it. In this case it would be slightly modified due to the mechanical advantage in your system, but the mechanics are the same

Maybe use the grippy gloves to go up and then switch to your Metolius gloves to descend, they would work much better than the grippy ones for this use. The grippy ones will wear off the rubber quickly.

X2 on what has all ready been said. IF you were to climb on the above system with 3/8 rope. In rock climbing you are climbing the rock face, and there is a second person to help run your ropes if you fall. Straight rope climbing is night and day different.
The only time a prussic hitch is desirable is for bi-directional loading. Sure it would work, but it may be too much hassle. A blakes is very much a progress capture, which you can rappel with. Personally I'd choose a eye to eye, but a blakes is cheap, simple, and very effective for the task at hand. For added measure toss in a stopper knot on the tail of the blakes, just for piece of mind.

Well, I don't have the Metolius, but I do have West Marine fingerless leather palms. Good idea to take off the rubbers though.

Since I'm already using too small line for you guys, what material, size, would you suggest for the Blake's hitch?

You can eliminate the short piece of rope by tying the end of the rope to the shackle and leaving a long tail, which you use to tie the Blake's.

Are you saying to use the running end of my climbing rope to make the Blake's?

It would be the stationary end that you would use with the tail. Here is how to set it up with either the tail end, or with a split tail (short piece of rope)

The split tail will require more hardware (carabiner) or knots to be tied.

Ok, that's the standing end, not the running end, but it makes more sense. But my standing end is on the top pulley, 57' above me. So I would just use the split tail version. Thanks.
