Helmet Cams

This has probably been asked but unless I missed something recent, its probably already out of date.

Helmet cams. What do you like/dislike about yours? What features are important? Which ones should I look at in the 300 to 400 dollar price range? Hi def preferably.

All advice appreciated.

In that price range go for a contour HD.

I'm using a Drift 170 non HD and am very happy with it. It uses AA batts and if you use the new Sanyo rechargeables you will find it records a very long time. I usually get 2-3 hours record time out of a set of batts.

As for HD or not since I don't have much in the way of HD monitors to watch it on HD is a non issue for me.

Drift does have an HD 170 as well. Keep your eyes out on EBAY and you will find something that will work for you.

Contour HD 1080, I've hade it for about a 6 months now and it's perfect. Great helm mounting, realy nice movie quality and simple with one big button to record and stop, even handling with thick gloves won't be a problem.

The batterie is realy great and you can get about 2 hours off recording out off a full battery.
There are some different modus for recording wich you can choose from.

Best off the contour is it's small size and it's rugged and strong casing wich is no luxury for treeclimbers :-)

get it with minimal 16 GB memory.

so, that's enough, allmost looks like I want to sell you mine - but I wont ;-)

climb safe

I second the contour hd. Got mine for $260CAD. I dont make anything interesting with it tho, unless videos of consults and sales appeal to anyone.

Career evolutions - i miss climbing

I had 2 drifts and broke them both because I wreck stuff
I now use the contour(my second contour). I dropped the 1st one 80 feet after the mount broke. (again, dont slam your head into a branch and this shouldnt happen)
The go pro looks good. I want one for a second cam on the ground.

Thats was no help at all was it?

i have a helmet cam but i cant friggen get it to work. it stays on timelapse mode. soo disappointing when you click it on for 2 hours then bring it home and upload just to find out it took a 2 second video every 5 seconds. ugghh!
its a tachyon micro RC

My buddy had a go pro that he suited me up with on a climb, said it had some legit stuff on it... then we attached it to a cedar log we were caber tossing and crushed it...

Heres a montage of the may long weekend he shot with it. (I was inspecting the tree in the first bit so nothing was being dropped on my friends un protected heads.)

I went to REI yesterday and got the gopro hero. Really simple to use, I mounted it to helmet with the curved sticky pad, hope I dont regret not using the strap in the case that it falls off. Its nice, it can even go kayaking with me since the case is water proof.

Anyway, what editing software are you guys using?

Just watched treeness' video for the tenth time. That could be a tourism ad for Canada. That's what many of us do and worse. We have some big backyards.

And what editing softwear are you guys using?

Sad but true.

Video editing software. If you don't want to shell out the hundreds for pro-level software like Vegas you can go for high end consumer software. Cyberlink and Adobe Premiere Elements 9 get good reviews. Ijust bought the latter and frankly find it tough to figure out. I have ordered a book to help me.
The few vids I have made and wasted your time with were made on Windows Moviemaker that came with the computer. Its not a bad place to start and if your computer is fairly new you probably already have it!

do you guys find any difficulty mounting a go pro on climbing helmets? i think im gonna buy a new helmet cam and am leaning to the go pro.

Yes and I lost one because the mounts suck.
I use a bunch of rubber bands along with the mount they provide.

The Gopro came with so many options for mounting!

(Thats what she said)

I cant wait to use it a little more. I like the Contour but was dissapointed with the mounts for sure.

Jess, when did you get the gopro? Used it on any of your vids yet? Dude, you've run the gammut of helmetcams. I guess there's just one left........the holy grail....

Thanks Frax! thats all I need. It was right in front of my face.

My buddy filmed that vid and he's a professional photographer. I'm not sure what software he runs but I know he works with a mac, so I would assume what ever high end program would be a safe bet.

Hope I dont regret using the go pro mount that just sticks on the helmet. There is a strap one too but I haven't fooled with it.

Anyone have problems with the mounts that just stick on?
