heli removal

Looks like a good time looking forward to the rest of the video. Makes sense having the tree premarked with straps and paint to save time on a expensive job.

What size picks were you aiming for weight wise? Are the safety factors roughly the same as what you would cut a crane chart?
we were aiming for around 900 , you don't have to be as cautious with balancing as you do with your crane pics as the chopper isn't as sensitive , the tree only had limbs on one side so the pieces we were cutting moved considerably .
basically you do a step cut with your final cut on the bottom and the piece is ripped up and away.
Its less complicated but vitally important to get your weights spot on to maximise efficiency , that pick in the vid was 800 and to be honest i was not expecting that much so we had to re sling on our way down as the next pieces were bigger.

Good teaser there look forward to the main film.
is the short turn around time the reason there was two climbers stationed it the tree ?
Yeah bro it ended up working well until it came down to the but pieces and then it got a bit fiddly with our spikes and saws being so close to each other . we were lucky that the chopper was bringing up supplies for a landscaping company also so it gave us a small amount of breathing room for re slinging etc.

yeh well a 30 second window to sail down to the next cut pull the climb line down to the next tip then sling the heli hook and cut a piece then repeat, yeh I 'd be grateful for a second climber on the stem and a few gaps to take a breathe.

I remember an article in arbclimber magazine talking about heli rigging ..its been a dream of mine ever since .. Sometimes just playing in the tree ..I pretend the chopper will be back in thirty seconds and I gotta be ready ..that kind of pressure you must have lots of focus not to miss a step.Cause as we know in this business missing steps equals serious injury or death usually ,no joke .. I can see two climbers being the way for sure . just no playing around until your feet are on the ground and the works all done. Awesome job!

yeah @Stihlmadd thankfully there was only a couple of times when the chopper was back in thirty seconds and that was for the top pieces other wise he would have been waiting a lot as re slinging and getting your lanyard around the stem was a mission in itself with no tope rope. The other times we managed to have packages on the ground with a few branches cut previously to open it up for the hook and also some tonne sacks of sand etc to be moved. the butt of the tree was 4 and half meters in circumference so towards the end the cuts where taking a long time, not to mention slipping and sliding around on the bark which was very thick. @Aaron Cipolletti Ive always wanted to also I'm just lucky I've had the opportunity so early in my career.

having just done some dead gums that were 4 mtrs around with no bark I feel for you on pine stems that big, spiking around on a really big radiata trunk with a oversized saw is a genuine workout.
look forward to seeing it :D
