Haul Bags For Crane Work

So I remember reading Royce's post about crane bags for climbing lines when doing crane work, and I've been thinking about getting one.

My first choice is to get Reg's crane bag and modify it to be used as a backpack for a climb line.

I'm also looking at this bag.

Anybody have any other suggestions? I'm leaning more towards a Haul Bag (backpack) rather than a rope bag clipped to the waist.

I really like using the Black Diamond haul bags. I like the "touchstone" size for gear and the "stubby" size for rope. The stubby holds 200' of 1/2" rigging line. Perfect for crane jobs. I have had my "touchstone" for over 9 years and is very durable, more than the Metolius by far. I climbed over 4000 vertical feet of rock with the BD haul bag and still works great!

the nice thing about not having backpack straps is there is nothing to get hung up on the way down. and hell what is wrong with the bag on the hip i had to run the work climb that way in warren wilson (last or two?) years ago. chip would not let me toss the bag even if i called an all clear (what a dick). and i ran the whole climb like that and did pretty well. it can't be about the lack of speed; so is it a balance thing?

Jeff, I never said that there was anything wrong with having a bag on the hip during crane work. This is the way that I have done it too in the past.

I have heard from others (Todd Kramer being the most recent) that haul bags were a better choice than a rope bag, so I thought that I'D give it a try.

Maybe I should ask the question, Haul Bag, or Rope Bag, which do climbers prefer to do crane work with?

I took an old 2 section backpack (compact and simple) up for crane work today and it worked great. I tried it both on the leg (biner on top hang strap to my hip and my right leg through one back strap cinched up tight), and on the back. The back pack scenario was easier, IMO. Either way, I'm new to rope bags, and must say that they're great for crane work. It's nice to just drop your rope when you get to the right spot; rather than either fishing the headache ball through the canopy, or dragging your rope all over the exterior crown and pulling it through.

the "buck tube"? I looked at that, really nice; $100+ seemed a little steep, though.

Thanks for the info Mark and ThrashBastid.

I was wondering too if that's the "buck tube" that I've seen Ed Carpenter with.

I think that I saw one down at Mayers Power Products earlier this month. Is that right Bull?

Not that one Chris. It is like the two other new black ones with coated material. Looks like a haul bag. There is one for the leg and then big one right now. The medium is coming out soon and that is the one that I want to try.

Thanks Mark. Please keep us posted on when the medium bag is available and what your opinion is of them.

Bull, is Mayer Power Products going to have the bag for sale when it comes out?

for me its on the hip.. the smaller the better.. 372 at the right. bag on the left ,, just seems balanced ,, but have not done crane work in like 4 years,,,although,, hear it here first BARTLETT just bought a crane, for the newton area , and when it comes to the northshore i think i;ll be riding/
