Hard Hat Test

I'm putting together a safety topic for tomorrow morning. Looking for some information on how everybody checks their hard hat. I was taught to place my hands on each side of the hat and squeeze to see if it is still plyable. Also, inspect the outside for cracks, UV damage, broken suspension, check stitching, and the year. The only problem is I am unable to find the squeeze test in writting. Can someone help.

I've taken an old hard hat that is out of service, placed it on a table and whacked it with a hammer...where PPE! You'd be surprised how hard you have to whack it to get it to break. Even by not breaking it anyone can see how strong they are...pretty dramatic!

I'll bet that Google will turn something up if you keep searching.

Sounds like a good YouTube video in the making!

But, the topic is a good reminder to take a close look at my helmet.

Thanks for the post TreeWacker. BTW. Welcome to the Buzz!

we ran a bullard hard hat over with a skid steer once to see what would happen. it didnt shatter just caved in a bit.. i was impressed.

That's pretty good considering how little weight would be required to break a neck or damage a skull.

Thanks jamin. Soo the topice was not today, it will have to wait until next week. But I'm getting some ideas from the replies. First, have everybody bring in their hard hat. Second, have the talk. Third, after the talk go through everybodies hat and check it out together. O yeah, have a garbage can sitting next to me while inspecting. People at my place have already told me they would sacrifice safety for comfort. I plan on putting a end to that. Some hats I think are 10 to 12 years old. It actually kinda scares me.

We actually dropped/through chunks of firewood at a retired Vertex vent. I was really suprised to see how much it took to cave it in (it did not crack until the third or forth strike). I beleive my neck would have been broken after the first hit. But my skull would have been intact.

TreeWacker I think I would have something to destroy them before they went to the can, tree guys love to get something that is being thrown away and use it as "home"
