HÖLLENREICH, so is he gone?

I've been away on vacation and after that too busy to have been on the buzz, but I've heard from a few others that HÖLLENREICH was probably banned from the buzz.

I found the ITCC thread with Mark that probably got him banned.

Go figure, bust on the forum owner.

It was no where near anything like HÖLLENREICH has given many other members, but hey, whatever....

R.I.P. HÖLLENREICH.

ahhh, I see. Darn, I missed the fireworks. Thanks for updating me. I haven't seen Ed in weeks. We might have him down for a day or two next week though.

As far as forum owners are concerned, you would think the more people that are reading a post, the more they should keep that stuff around. Higher numbers are better for the advertisers I'm sure...

Just like the "reality" tv shows, keep the drama going because it makes more viewers.

But maybe Mark and Tom would rather keep things clean and don't care so much about forum traffic.

It's their site, they should do what they want.

It sure would be interesting to be a moderator or owner of this site and see the statistics of this site. The amount of users and traffic and what gets read and what gets the most attention. (I know we can see some of that ourselves).

I wonder if following a ban on a character like Hollen results in less traffic and less user time on the buzz, or more. I think less.

He is my usual actions on the buzz:

1. I view the last topic that I posted on and read any posts after my post to see what others say and see if I feel a need to comment again.
2. I then usually click on my ID name and click on view users posts to see if there was any more I posted on that I forgot about.
3. Find something with some drama: I click on a topic that I remember an interesting character has been posting on. Always Hollenreich is/was number one. I find his old post, click on his name and click on view all of users posts. If he was posting lately, I click on his recent replies to see what he's been writing and often get a laugh or maybe even get a little mad. If he doesn't have anything new, I might try OldDirty, (A new one, that usually pisses me off, but that's cool too.) After that, maybe a co-worker on the buzz or JerryB.
4. If I've been let down and none of those things worked for some excitement and I still have some time, I'll then click on the different forums and read the titles to see if anything interests me. Many times, not much going on. I don't read them unless the title really catches me.

I'm doubting I'll be on here much the rest of this summer since Hollen is gone and OldDirty hasn't been posting and work is busy. I'm sure I'll get back into it this fall and winter though. Trees From a Distance can be fun too.

X,

Are you looking for quantity or quality? It seems like your criteria for success is quantity. That isn't what I want.

How do you measure success?

If you hire a climber who can work fast and put a lot of brush on the ground but in the process makes too many mistakes, what do you do? Do they get fired the first time? Do you take time to train and coach them about how you expect them to perform? At what point do you raise the stakes and set performance standards that cannot be crossed?

You're smart enough to understand my metaphor.

Over my career I've met people who are fun to be around but I would never dream of having them work for me.

On a tree crew in your metaphor: I personally would try to coach and train them if their mistakes weren't so bad. (however, if they were big mistakes, they'd even be gone right then) Then after instruction and coaching; if they didn't learn their lesson, they would be gone.

On a forum, I don't know what I'd do. Well, being me; I'd get rid of them I guess. But it would be hard decissions I'm sure, because advertisers probably want to see lots of traffic in quantity and advertisers money is probably needed to keep the site paid for. Or, maybe advertisers never see the statistic anyway and it doesn't matter.

I'm glad I don't have to make those decisions. All I have to do is visit the site and enjoy it.

Of course a bad apple on the buzz might stir up some traffic, but after a while, I'm sure you have to think about the risk that bad apple scaring away new users and ticking off others.

I wasn't looking for answers on my last post, just stating things for interest.

I don't envy your possition and you probably made the best decission you could have, Ed made it for you probably.

Since HÖLLENREICH is probably gone for good. I feel I should say some kind words about him.

Most of you knew the HÖLLENREICH character on the buzz. BTW if you don’t know what that means, it’s German for “HELL DOMAIN”.

But you would be surprised to meet him in person. He contract climbs for us from time to time. And the real person, Ed is quite different.

I’ll admit, before his first day here, I thought that he’s probably going to have an attitude that we don’t want to put up with. But he wasn’t like that. I’m glad we tried him out.

He’s always been in a great mood and ready to work hard.

I was amazed that he was polite and understanding of ground crew members, even on hot humid days when maybe a less experienced groundman might not have let the rope run well enough or made some other mistake. He would give them positive feedback and communicate well.

As a real person, Ed is a pretty decent guy; a hard worker, a father and husband.

We will continue to use the real Ed as a contract climber and I think that other good companies should too. (Maybe if a company runs a poor operation and does things stupid; maybe the HÖLLENREICH would come out in real life too?)

R.I.P. HÖLLENREICH

The moral of the story is 'be yourself.' Don't be a d0uche just because you're hiding behind an internet personality. In general, the most controversial posters don't use their real name and they hide their info.

On some forums I've frequented in the past, people have a 'real' persona and an 'alter ego' as well. Personally I find that kind of weak.

x! you missed me! how come you never made it to the shop when you were up here? you couldve gotten the chance to see some real crane work being performed........ quite admirably i might add.

it is a crying shame ed had to be shown the door. he was one of the only guy's keeping these sally's in check. with the truth regardless of how he said it. i didn't get the chance to read those 3 deleted threads but i assume some of it was venom filled..... so what? its only words. if it ain't your father saying this chit to you then man up and deal with it.

stay safe.

If it was only between people in a private setting then you're right dirty. The reality of moderating a public forum and having to uphold the rules is different. There comes a point when controversial crosses the lines and negatively impacts the quality of the site. Much alike to advertising, some push the boundaries of what is acceptable and the response is great and others cross that boundary and are shut down.

Ed did show his "kinder" self once in a while but he really lost it on those threads and needed to be held accountable.
