Grove GMK3050

Anybody use a GMK3050? We are considering one as our next crane. We have a local grove dealer and have been happy with our current grove tms300. Were thinking late 90s to early 2000s for the gmk.

We are concerned out the gmk being a bit complicated and expensive to maintain. Their performance seems to be very good. We can see where all wheel steer would be very helpful to get into tight driveways, etc. Having a shorter carrier would be nice. Theres times we have to leave the drivers cab part hanging out in the road due to not being able to fit. The way people drive around here concerns me that someone might eventually hit it. Thoughts?

I’d like to hear some insight on this as well. We’re not quite ready to upgrade yet but will be in a few years. I’ve drooled over those and the same size liebherr for a while now.

Park a blocker truck to protect the crane.

Those are legit! There’s one in Connecticut for seemingly short money:
…but you probably know that already. I just got word on the street that a colleague not far from me is going from giant K-Boom to a 3060. That’s nothing to sneeze at. It looks like the difference between the 3050 and the 3060 is that the latter has not 2, but 3 windshield wipers on the driver’s cab. :)

Thats 3050 is one of them i had been eyeballing. Most seem to have a luffing jib. I would rather than an all manual as the jib chart almost doubles. That one is actually in Albany, NY. Im in Alabama.

The things that scare me are the driveline. Its Mercedes powered. Has independent suspension so lots of u joints and final drive boxes. Also the megatrack suspensions that is height adjustable seems like it could be problematic. Dont want to get into a crane that needs $50k in repairs every year.

The 3060 is way out of our budget. Used ones start around $450k. It would be nice to have the 140 ft boom vs the 125 ft on the 3050. We do have times we cant get our tms300 in places that I think the gmk would go. We recently bought a 2892 manitex boom truck for tighter spots and quicker running around.

What are your dot max axle weights in Alabama? I know in ga I’d have to pull a single trip permit every time we left the shop unless we had a boom dolly. I don’t know if that’s worth the hassle for us.

I guess only you can answer that one. There is no silver bullet in this game. Just one that hits most of your targets.

A lot of times we don't have an extra truck to block with but when we do, we use one. I only have one full time employee and some part timers right now.
you are thinking of getting a 3050 and you only have one full time guy? I find that to be mind blowing, but good on ya if it is working.

Rayzors Edge tree service in Stratford CT has a nice one for sale, they can be found on FB among other places. They are selling cuz they have a newer 3060 and they also just bought a 100t rough terrain Grove, afaik.

We crane sub to 7 or 8 other tree services plus do our own work. Its not uncommon for us to do crane jobs 3 days out of the week. Sometimes we run it everyday. We use contract climbers when needed for our own work a lot as well.

We used to run a gmk 3055 and just traded it in for a gmk3060L. They are absolute game changers. So incredibly strong and so nimble. We can get it pretty much everywhere. Like every other piece of equipment they have their issues. We bought from Shawmutt for both of ours and they have been incredible.

Has anyone ever run a boom dolly? I think I’d be legal in Ga on a annual permit with full counterweight and a boom dolly.

We bought a 2009 GMK3050-1! Bought it from a really nice guy in NH. He had bought a new Liebherr 70 ton.

I ended up flying to Albany, NY to look at the older 3050 posted earlier in the thread. It was supposed to be a 'jobsite ready' crane but when I got up there the transmission had a major leak and was 1.5 gallons low on fluid. Also found out that the LMI is no longer supported and would have to upgraded for $25K if it has and issue. Also had something leaking hydraulic fluid in the front above the skid plate.
