gri-gri question

I need a very simple answer to a very simple question. Somebody I know is currently using a Gri-Gri in place of a friction hitch. Last I remember the tool wasn't designed for this application. Am I correct?

Well yes and no. It only works in one direction, so it can be used by a groundsman to belay a climber, or it can be used by a climber to descend on a rope. It just does not really work for up and down.

I use it when I choke a single line on a spar. Great way to descend without a figure eight and knot.

It would work but there is a moment when the GG will not lock off. The clutching action works in a shock load. Not too high a shock load BUT....there are many stories of people falling, not always a grounder, under no load falls.

An Edelrid Eddy might be a good choice...I've been using one for a little while and like it alot.

The grigri is a belay device for single rope. It sucks when used on DdRT. Works on SRT but is a PITA when wet. Not easy to back off and like all these devices save the unicender, cannot be used one handed.

One handed operation is key to safe, smooth positioning and very helpful in self rescue (e.g. a cut forearm - typical serious injury).

if you use grigri in the DRT if often stuck.
it is hard to go up, there are some tricks to do it a little lighter, with a lift.
grigri is not a goog solution in the double rope technic.

but one use is very good.
in trees which are heavy to climb, i use sometime a inline system with the grigri on the ground point, so in case of emergancy a groundsman is able to rescue me very fast.

Think of the Eddy as a combination of the best parts of the GriGri and I'd in one tool.

The nice part of the Eddy is that the cam can be thumbed so the rope will slip through. This allows the climber to limb walk out smoothly with one hand. Then, to return, just pull slack like you would using a friction hitch with a slacktender.

For descent the green handle is pulled back like the GG. If the handle is pulled too far it locks off like the I'd does. All of this in a package that is comparible to the GG.

Tom you had me convinced at the expo to check it out. That's why I was hanging around in aww of your ascension methods and the fingering the cam of the Eddy I liked being that it is more like the friction hitch on the limb walking aspect but I still have my piggy bank accumulating for the Uni.
