Green horn splicer, keep an eye on your lines.....

well this weekend I picked up one of the Samson splicing kits, the bigger one with the assortment of fids and the long skinny fid, comes in a tube with some simple instructions.

So....now I am looking to get a start on learning my splices.

First question, is a Point Hudson phid a `necessity` for splicing three strand or does it simply make the job easier ?

Secondly what are some good resources for a beginning splicer ?

I see the Samson book, and there is a lot of online instruction available, but any advice, as per usual, would be most welcome.

I am shooting for a eye splice on a 12 strand first, then I will expand from there. hopefully this is realistic and I'm not being over ambitious.

Thanks for your time guys,
-Grais.

i've never used a fid to splice three strand. crown knots or eye slices

I use a Hollow fid when splicing 3 strand. They are available at West Marine. They make splicing 3 strand much easier, quicker, and the splice comes out looking much nicer.

For splicing hollow braid, the tube fids and pushers are nice, but coat hangers work faster. Instead of pushing the bury through, you're pulling it.

If you're intrested, I can take some pics of my coat hanger fids and post them.

Re: Green horn splicer, keep an eye on your lines.

One bit of advice might be not to try splicing 12 strand rope. That one is pretty much a non splicable rope.

Re: Green horn splicer, keep an eye on your lines.

Check out Toss's video guide to splicing. Although i don't splice one of my co-workers does and he says comes highly recommended.

Re: Green horn splicer, keep an eye on your lines.

Firstly Thanks everyone.
@ Norm H, please do post some pics of fids, I'm a homebrewer/Macgyver(ie the grizzly splice thread..lol) at heart, so any and all homemade fids I can check out is cool, and very helpful, so post em if you got em.

@ John H regarding the 12 strand, I guess I was, or am just thinking along progressive lines, and that after learning some simpler three strand splices, one would move on to 12 strand, assuming I was working with arborist rope.
What would you suggest after working with some of the simpler splices moving on to ?
The guide that came with the Samson kit shows a double braid splice, there's so damn many types of rope, 12 strand, 16 strand, 2n1, which I believe is a double braid rope, am I wrong in this ?
Then there's the 7/16" ropes, that I assume are mainly a kernmantle type, but again, just general assumptions, realizing there's more variety than anything most anything else.

Just sitting here waiting for the rep from BC Hydro so I can do my PSSP course with him today. That is Power System Safety Protection, IIRC. lol.
Basically going over the limits etc.. and a whole bunch of useless stuff about sub stations, for some reason they insist on teaching us arbos all about their sub station procedures here ???? Gotta do it this way as I have been out of the biz for more than 5 years, should be a hoot.
Till later, stay safe,
-Grais.

Re: Green horn splicer, keep an eye on your lines.

Just a correction....the 12 strand hollow braid ropes are easy to splice, 12 strand ropes like arborplex, forestry pro, etc. can't. Also, beware, there are some 12 strand ropes with cores in them, that kinda look like 16 strand.

That Brion Toss video is excellent by the way.

Re: Green horn splicer, keep an eye on your lines.

The 12 strand solid braids are "plaited" ropes,i.e., True Blue, Arborplex, Forestry Pro, etc. They are much strecthier than hollow braids. There is a way to splice them, but an extremely lengthy and tedious process.

I'll take some pics and post them later.

Also, a Splicing Symposium class shortens the learning curve by a lot. I know it is a bit of a distance from your location, but the next one will be in New Hampshire USA this September.

Where in NH is it going to be John?

Re: Green horn splicer, keep an eye on your lines.

Here are some pics of the splicing tools I use: from left to right
coat hanger fid for 1/2" & larger ropes with a long bury

coat hanger fid for short buries (after a locking brummel)

Smaller diameter coat hanger fid for 3/8" ropes or smaller

1/4" wand for splicing 1/2" 16 strand

Point Hudson fid

Small hollow fid for 3 strand

Large hollow fid

.031" diameter piano wire attached to a krab for eye splicing 11mm/7/16" climbing rope

What are some simple splicing 12 and 16 strand ropes ?

True Blue and Black Max are both 'plaited' ropes. Click on the link Zac sent to me from Samson. It took me about an hour to do the splice. Not worth the time, in my opinion.

so what do you charge for the 12 strand true blue splice?

[/ QUOTE ]

I would not do that splice for anyone, but me. Takes about an hour per splice.
John, you can most assuredly do it in less time.
On the other end of that rope is an eye splice with a non locking snap (at the time I spliced it, non locking snaps were acceptable), that's how old it is. I liked True Blue as a lanyard at the time. It's gotta be a dozen years old. It was on display at the ISA booth at the 75th anniversary.

Re: Green horn splicer, keep an eye on your lines.

Ha ha ha.....Just kidding on the splice....our customers would kill us if we took an hour to do splices, that is a little to long for our production goals and schedule.

I hear you on the "personal" splices, I've got a few of those.
