Greatest Story

In May'75 i thought i heard the greatest story;
and i still think so....
.
i was a jr. in high school, in Photo Club,volunteered to take graduation pix for the present graduating seniors commencement ceremony.
It was a hot day, stuffy, couldn't wait to get done.
.
That was in northern Indiana;mostly grow corn, soy and snow; all in their proper seasons of course.
Another was to be boring speaker, stood
and told this story:
.
How you are walking thru barren woods alone, soaked, starving and freezing as dusk starts early to make it worse.
You know they will find you frozen in a few days, or in spring thaw..
.
You keep steadfastly walking tho, not just laying down.
Head low,tromping thru knee deep snow thru blinding sleet, hair, brow and 5 day old beard icy
Somehow, you end up facing an empty cabin, just after a blizzard starts.
.
Work your way in, for first time in days no wind,ice,rain nor snow; but still starving, soaked and cold.
You dare to look outside, some deadwood laying around all soaked as the blizzard creeps some inside door, you lock it out..
Later, still freezing and facing death, walk around cabin, Bic lighters had just come out;and yours lights.
In a dark closet like room, you suddenly find a pile of dry wood; fill the fireplace and soon the cabin is a sauna drying your clothes.
.
You wake the next morning, the sun is shining, clothes are warm and dry;literally have a new lease on life!
Humbly, you go to visit that woodpile in the closet that saved you before leaving;just had to look at it in full light.
On top of it , in the full light can now see a sign placed:
"Use but what ya need;
but please always leave the pile bigger than ya'found it" !
.
i wouldn't have heard the greatest story of life if not volunteering;
And still continued to live by it's weight and measure.
.
To me, that story is here, in this place!

Good story...but one minor detail: If you spend more than about 3 hours lost in the woods in northern Indiana, something ain't right with you. :loco:

i live in Florida now,
so in telling the story i always set the atmosphere for where i was told it at for my "what is snow" neighbors of different realities;that didn't grow up walking sideways on feet in summer for stronger ankles for winter ice skating. Been under that ice 2x, once, didn't think i'd make it out the first time, 2nd time was just stupid later teenage play in colder Michigan proving i'm something i'm not...
.
i'm not sure if the place for the story was mentioned;
kinda never thought the setting itself was Indiana;
always had that even farther off "To Build a Fire" -Jack London feel to me!

Go with northern WI, MN, UP of Michigan, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Upstate NY, VT, ME, NH, etc...... heck even southern IN. Less snow, but more woods.
