Needing to purchase a larger lowering device and would like the ability to be able to tension the line, lift limbs etc.

both the smart winch and GRCS are available locally to me, don’t have the time to order from overseas.

the smart winch is about $300 more than the GRCS, which way would people put their money?

I have a Grcs and have well over 300 dollars in mods. goods is not a well tuned machine good fenough for the money. had to replace gears and palls. once so far.
smart is smarter from what i have seen of it on line.

The Smart winch has better usability as you can go from lifting to lowering with out changing winch for bollard. I have seen plenty of guys lower medium sized wood, including myself, on the GRCS winch. I also have lowered big wood with the winch while using double whip that I had to stand up first.
Rarely do I use just the bollard.
Either one will serve you well. "Use what you got and use it until it's used up"

I have no experience or input on the Smart winch but do trust the advice from others here on it.

My 2 cents on the GRCS is I have hung whole trees with it out of another. Pretension, cut some, tension more, and cut thru. I've done this where the drop zone is riddled with obstacles and structures. Also once on a 16=18' 'dia black cherry with base rot leaning over a shed. You can lower out of the winch effectively when keeping the line tension. I would not negative rig with it.

Like I said, I am not comparing to the Smart Winch. Just posting my experiences with the GRCS that I purchased in '16.

The GRCS is nails. Like 96coal we have hung whole trees with it; also I have no experience with the smart winch. But we have made a lot of production with the GRCS. After years of use the first parts we had to replace were the rubber feet on the back of the plate. Other than that we’ve used it to aid in felling large spars, lifting limbs over houses/obstacles, and recently we used it as part of an English reeve system for rigging material out of a valley.

first post, but i have been a constant reader.

i own a smartwinch and a hobbs. i work alot for one company, they have 2 grcs (probably over 10 years) and 1 smartwinch (since 2 years) all their equipment gets abused. the grcs's never broke down, they do look really ruff. the smartwinch just recently needed a rebuild..

my smartwinch needed 100€ spare parts. the "bridge" under the shiny metal front plate of the self tailing mechanism fell out (without us noticing) and when we pulled over a tree, internal plastic parts and screws sheared of.
because the shiny metal front plate pressed down on the self tailing jaws. sorry for my complicated explanation.

after that i bought a hobbs..

main advantage to me is that the smartwinch only has two parts.. how many times did people forget just one of the many components of the grcs and just realised when everything was set up..
