GRCS + drill

Recently did a job on a cliffside requiring wenching the trees up the bank. We ended up using the GRCS with a Stihl gas powered drill to snatch 10 ft sections. Worked pretty well but I am wondering if there may be a more powerful drill option because there were times we had to hand crank because the drill didn't have the guts.

Milwaukee super hawg for the win.

I have one from my days as an electrician. I have used it for exactly what you're talking about. Set a block 20-40 feet in a tree at the top of the bluff if you can. Works great. Plenty of power, in low on drill and winch. Generally I won't spin the winch in high though I'd rather over work the drill then the winch. Cost of replacement...

In my case a lot of it is limbing windows in excurrent trees. I'll rig 10 or so limbs with zips and the end of the rope is tied to a final limb. Trip it, and the bundle goes. Tie the end of your climbing line to it, or a second tag line to retrieve the winch line.

Makes some of this work possible...

Makes the trip up the hill/cliff a lot quicker and more fun too ;)

P.s. to clarify its torque, it will cause slippage of the rope on the winch drum if you catch the load on a stump or something.

I had the same problem you guys are talking about when on a friends crew. He has a stihl drill, and I was blown away at how it could not barely pull compared to what I was used to with the super hawg.

Yeah, that was bad ass! Just had to do a lot of hopping through blackberry bush and cringe to think if I would have got snagged and drug through that shit. The gas drill worked but definitely has it's limits. Will look into the Milwaukee.
Yes, I wouldn't feel safe doing it without the intercoms. :)

Reason it is not sold in the US according to a Canadian dealer is that a guy in the states snapped his wrist and sued the company. .....ok I guess that's about enough torque on that then...! Ha.

Ive used my Tanaka gas drill with similar results. Good on the light stuff, but not enough torque. I'm 185 lbs and it barely lifted me up on DRT. (Was trying to eliminate the need for a raptor :)).
I purchased a Milwaukee Super Hawg. It has more torque than you'll ever need with the GRCS. The only draw back is that it is electric powered, so if you are working remotely, you'll need a generator.

I use a dewalt right angle drill with a small generator to do high speed winching. I've used the stihl gas powered drill but it sounded like I was killing the clutches inside it when I tried moving heavier pieces. You could always run an extension cord to the house if your working in a residential location but the generator comes in handy.
