Grapple/hooklift build

Looking at building a hooklift truck and a loader skid like this. Going 3-4 axle 4-500hp. 13,15 or 18spd. Dual interlock. Would like a cabover but those things are scarce. Actually looking at some mid 80s Pete 362 day cabs for 5-7grand and totally overhauling. Truck will pull trailers of various types at times.

Looking at making the loader skid reversible so I don't have to decide on cab or rear mount. Palfinger q150tr will reach about 31'. Have a quote from tiffin and trying to get a quote from a west coast dealer but it seems palfinger is not keen on customers getting second opinions because they are telling west coast guys no go because i already had tiffin quote the build. That alone is making me look into other options. Would love some input. Log lift? Kesla?

Hooklift units. I have zero experience as to whose are best value. Looking at about 50000lb unit.

Loader skid will be 18' box and whatever the loader adds in length.

Fire away boys!

The jmac system is nice but the z fold loaders are substantially lighter and the I don't think their system is compatible with a hooklift.

I have learned that kesla has a rear mount push off option that is worth considering. Apparently one can just quickly detach from the loader and drive away. That's VERY interesting to me but I need to get more info on it.

With a cab mount I'm going to lose a lot of reach and accessibility. Plus I'll also lose the the ability to load a trailer unless I unhook and pull beside which will not be possible in many areas.

Hey folks. I’m about to possibly put together a hooklift on a 33k peterbuilt but I realized I may be sacrificing room in the bed width-wise because the cans run more narrow than a dump bed. Is this true and does it matter? I want to have a 15’ long, 5’ high can for wood and a chip can.

Thanks.

The can's outside width needs to be 8.5' or less for DOT... less than that if you want tarp arms to get around it.

My can is 7' wide (inside), 7' walls, and 16' long. That puts my overall height at 11'8".

I added a tag axle to my 33klb GVW truck, for my use it would have really sucked without the tag.

My truck with an empty container weighs 23klb, container weighs 5740lb. I have 26klb of payload with the container per axle capacity.

16klb load on a 33klb truck means the truck and container weighs 17kb... my cab and chassis (with PTO and previous hydro tank) was 11880lb. The hoist will weigh a few thousand pounds...

Also on a typical 33klb GVW truck, the axle ratings are 12k/21k. Bridge law caps a single axle at 20klb, and the spread between the axles determines the rating for the pair (steer and drive).

I'm very happy with how my truck turned out compared to how I had it designed. With a single axle, it has to be very far back to give you the stability to lift the container, compromising turning radius greatly. With my setup I can lift the tag axle and my wheel base is 15'4". With the tag down, I have loaded the 5.7klb container with 26.5klb (32.2klb combined) of rock without lifting the front end off the ground. Even without the tag down I can load the container, the front end lifts until the tag hits the ground (wheelie bar that doesn't mar the surface). It gives me more brakes... it's a win/win with very little compromise (just money, the weight is negligible in the scheme of my truck).

49560lb in this picture, 10880lb on the steer axle.

13klb excavator, 5740lb container, no problem.

For scale, that's a 6x10 trailer behind the truck.

Thanks Lumberjack. I'm trying to get a handle on what the weight distribution would be with a cab over 520 and palfinger hooklift. Oddly, the salesman is not getting back to me about buying a brand spanking new truck. I might have to try another dealership.

That is nice! What was the quote for the build? I wonder if they could do that with a smaller kboom?

You think a 20,000 lbs hook hoist is good for a 33k truck? The salesman is inching me towards a 25,000 lbs hook but the box bin guy thinks a 20 is fine. Thoughts?

Mine is 24klb, I'm happy with it. I was looking for 18klb when I found the deal on this hoist.... glad I upsized and glad I added the tag I mentioned.

I can’t do the tag. Too much moola. I’ll pay excise tax. Trying to get a handle on what front axle and wheelbase would be good for a 16’ can.
