Gear Heads Opinions Needed

I've got a 2000 F350 (7.3L) and while I was driving last night, the engine just turned off! It was in a busy part of town, so it became a safety issue when I had to navigate a truck without power steering or power brakes (while I had my whole family in the truck with me).

While I was coasting, to find a smart place to stop, I put it in neutral and started it. It started and I revved it for a little while then went on my merry way.

What could have happened?

Is it a diesel?

That year (and many others for that matter) had a problem with turbo lock.

Did you still have lights and everything when it shut down? Were you listening to the radio, and if so do you recall it shutting off?

Check the neutral selection switch on the transmission linkage. There may be more than one or it might not be easy to find. If it happens again, try jiggling the selector into neutral as you turn the ignition switch.

It might not hurt to check the battery tie down. I had a vehicle once that used to stall out on turns, turned out the battery was loose and shorting out while turning.

LOL "Ask and you shall recieve". On a side note electrical issues are probably the toughest to troubleshoot. In the old days when an engine wouldn't run, it was either FIRE or FUEL.

With these newly re-thunk vehicles, it could be anywhere between the bumpers! Perhaps it was the fart detector!!!

OR if you have Firestone tires on it, it might be low pressure tire indicator. Just kidding.

I would like to have the auto manufacturers go back "OLD SCHOOL". Give me HORSEPOWER and fuel economy. It ain't gonna happen as that would require the builder to get along with the fuel guys. Kinda like asking for peace in the Middle East.

I have a 2000 F250, I remember this same thing happening to me, I was told, dirt or water got into the carb from some bad gas and choke it out;

Where was your last fill-up?
We been haveing problems in this area with water-gas, mainly from Speedway Gas Stations. The one here in my hometown finally dug up their tanks and replaced with a better filter system. So far no problems

Also try replacing your in-line gas filter.

So, far I've found a broken fuse (for the cigar lighter) and a some what loose positive cable on one of the batteries. I'm gonna drive it around here soon to do some bids. I'll see how she does.

I have also had a problem with the power mirrors lately. 2 of the 4 commands don't work. For example, I can move the mirror out & up (electronically) on the passenger side, but it will not move in & down. Opposite result on the driver's side...

Looks like you have a short somewhere! Ironically I know a person who had to have the wire harness replaced 2X, seems that Dodge PT Cruisers have wiring that MICE like, OR at least liked hers.

Hmmmm I have a BUNCH of kittens to give away! Probably NOT Politically Correct to let kitties kill mice anymore!!!!

I was thinking a little more on the history of the truck...

Last fall I had a employee (who is no longer with me) force a trailer light adapter incorrectly into the truck. How he did it I don't know. They are grooved to prevent that from happening. When it happened, I saw smoke comming out of the trailer's electrical box. I pulled out the trailer adapter and checked the wiring on the trailer. It had fried a bunch of stuff. I fixed the trailer wiring back then, but could not see anything wrong with the Ford.

Now I'm wondering if that one event really screwed up things.

Would that take a long time to create any problems for me?

You know holly, for a second there I thought you might be on your way to actually "bonding" with the TB family, now, I'm beginning to wonder.

That could be the case. I think it is more along the lines that "Happy Couples Fight".

Here are some ways to handle disputes and resolve differences:

•Make sure you clarify what it is you are discussing.

•If either of you are too angry to discuss the situation or problem, then set a time to get together later to discuss it.

•Be flexible and open to other solutions than your own. A willingness to compromise is important.

•Don't push one another's buttons. Don't be sarcastic or attack one another's self image.

•Don't interrupt one another. Listen. Be aware of your own body language and what it may be saying.

•Talk in a calm, respectful voice. Ranting and raving accomplishes nothing.

•Remember that a fair argument can enhance a relationship. Fight for your relationship, not to win.

This is Familytree's time to shine, it is how he handles this moment that will truely determine the out come of their relationship.

Sorry for the derail!!

Jamin,

My brothers a mechanic, he says one of the worst things you can do is to let your battery cables get corroded. He says the corrosion can then travel through the wires to the connections.

You may want to try to clean up the connections to the mirrors.

Make a paste out of baking soda and water, use a stiff brush and rinse with water. Once you get things cleaned up wipe on some dielectric grease and reconnect.

Sorry Ed. I didn't read the whole thing.

Tell me when you want to go blow for blow on diesels and I'll rightfully put you in your place.

Stick to to what ya know Ed, like climbing, riggin and kia.

And being an a$$hole. You've got that one nailed as well.

I've got some corrosion to clean off of the terminals & cables. I'll do that as well.

I have driven it this weekend without any problems. I'm hoping to replicate the problem in a controlled way. I think this situation may turn out to be a, "wait & see" thing.

Diesel verses Gas engines? Seriously? Do we have to go there?
