fun work days. share your stories

today i removed one large 40 foot long leaf casaurina and crown raised 1/3- 1/2 on the other three 60 footers. i had soo much fun with the last three trees because i had my TIP on the middle tree and was able to swing from one trunk to the other working from the top down. it was a blast! tons of handsaw cuts and a few with the chaingun

I don't know if it's fun but friken tired , busted 12 eucalyptus trees the tallest 110 ft , started at 8am and finish at 4:30 pm and tired but worth it, good money $$$

Later in SO-CAL

Did a removal of a 32" White Oak over a house and a shared yard/ garden. The tree was not dead but was suffering and infested with carpenter ants, the original proposal involved health care but they wanted it gone. Anyway, live wood is really fun for rigging, everything went as planned in the time allotted.

Then yesterday we volunteered our services to prune the deadwood out of a 55" four leader Scarlet Oak (competition worthy tree, I'll get pics up soon)and the owners supplied the keg and food for a tree party. We rehung a girdling tire swing and the owner (a pro photographer) took pictures and video while we worked in trade for the work.We left our lines in the tree and the kids and adults tried climbing. We hung some hammocks for sunset and then the owner brought out his turntables for the dance party

That's a fun work day.

Took out a huge eastern hemlock last week and requested a line drop from the pole to the house. One guy from the power co came out and threw the transformer with the hot stick and disconnected the line from the house. I figured that he would be the only one there but, as we got ready to drop the big boy, a 60 ft. pear and another hemlock the whole power co showed up. Musta been 3 huge trucks and 2 more smaller ones. At least 10 dudes just sitting there watching the trees drop. Things went according to plan and they had the line back up in a hour.

I don't mind an audience but I kinda think they were waitin for me to screw up. Or maybe they just like to sit in the shade after lunch watchin other people work lol.

BTW the very next day we had very severe storms that took the power down for days and it was their fannys on the line then. I bet they didn't see that coming and I hope they enjoyed their break watching me the day before.

One of the best days that I had hapened a few months into my career.... I was working on the Oregon coast and we got called out to clear an old service road for ODOT. It was about two days of dropping Red Alders and a couple random trees along the way... While a chipper crew followed us picking up our mess.
The second day wasent as fun because it was dumping rain like the oregon coast does... But it was still enjoyable

Fernhorn, was that storm by any chance on Wed. night? We got slammed here in Gville, SC. That's the fun I had. Thrus. we worked until 9 o'clock taking trees off of houses with a crane. Same stuff Fri. and Sat. Crane with us all day all three days. Pretty epic stuff. Should be pretty epic paycheck as well.

Had a contract to take down 1200 region forest trees in parks all over the place. Any dead hazardous or generally unsightly trees along the trails were marked. Flop 'em and leave. No worries about damage or anyhthing. As well as 30 or 40 wildlife trees topped at 35 feet. Boot around the bush in a truck or atv for a while. Great practice to try uncommon felling techniques with wedges ropes and winches with almost no consequences. Stuff you would usually want to try but always had an expesive target in the way and couldnt risk it. Still managed to trash a wire fence in the middle of nowhere i had to fix on a weekend.

Pruning at the Morton Arboretum for the Internationals last year. Opportunity of a life time. Complemented by Uncle Norm for a good throw line toss. Then finishing out the day sharing a burr oak with TK.

We arrived at an upscale neighbourhood outside of Toronto to do several removals for a contractor. As we walked the site with the client he casually mentioned that the house was to be torn down and go ahead and drop the trees on the house if we wanted.

What a change of perspective! Looking for a way to slam the tree into the house. It was a blast!

In Bend we have lots of pine, juniper, elm, and a variety of other trees, nothing really fun to climb... After eyeballing my neighbors maple for the past two years, finally had a chance to climb it. It's about 60' with similar spread, beat up bad by storms, lots of large broken hangers, and and never pruned by a pro. Boss left price open-ended, so set a high tie-in and worked the whole tree for 2 hrs. LOVING every minute!! It's leafed-out for the summer and looks great! Days like those remind me why it's so rad to work in the trees

Wraptored up a 100'ish stone dead eab ash Fri with no bucket or crane access. The toy never gets old for fun, knocking off limbs on way up while idling and bucked into stem and tied into machine. It has changed my whole world at 62.

People are in awe of it. The guy that invented it must laying on a beach somewhere with a cold marguerita in his hand and he deserves it completely.
