FREE WORK!

So I came across this Craigslist.com post a few months back, had yet signed up for TreeBuzz as a member so I couldn't post it sooner..
I've some reservations responding to things like these.. Sure it's a bit of an insult to people who do this for a living, seeing a homeowner ready to fork a job out and expect any uninsured jackoff with an axe will be happy to keep this pile off her hut and fence, yet knowing some heat with wood maybe it's worth the effort. I wonder if there was any contractual conditions to sign prior to the drop.
I understand some folks just don't have the funds to deal with a full price bid and in a sense this could be looked at as a public service and an out for word of mouth but realistically??
Any thoughts??

Welcome Travis.

Agree with SZ. If you only wanted free wood and its on the ground, you're training time/ effort/ tools for materials, but not a worthwhile business move, IMO.

Agreed, not worth it. I think it makes you appear cheap, or willing to do anything for a buck/ deal?? I have people say that they want me to do it for the firewood, here's what I tell them.

Say " x " tree has 1, maybe 2 cords in it, the tree has got to be worth at least $800 to take it down. If you do it for firewood, you have to use your time, gas, insurance, pay help to cut it, move it, split it, then dry it for a year, and then MAYBE you sell it for $200 a cord ( wich you then have to load again, and deliver ) so you might get $400 a year or so after the job??? no way it's worth it just for the wood. Occasionaly I will tell a HO I can run an ad for them to sell the wood themselves to make some back. Thats when they see it's not so easy and quick.

Never mind it's mine!! I phoned and told them that I'm coming up from Canada to do it. I told them I wasn't interested if I couldn't take the brush. They agreed. LOL

Total Free Ad FAIL!!

Great advice all around.
SZ, Straight to the point. My first reply and I think my new favorite quote.
Sean, The idea of free wood and free work just seemed an unbalance for me. I could have found enough heart strings to help the cause, but in a neighborly rather than bottom line sense. I like both, but prefer one more.
Raven, breaking things down to show the whole, nice model. Inevitable profit-loses are never a hindsight issue, like gas! Avoidance is likely the best route.. although, if I went there, made my bid and stuck to my guns worst thing I'd be facing is "No".
I have a harder time when it's not as easy as skip to the next post. Old Uncle Buck's asking I get some practice on his tree.. Yeah, I'm looking for practice but at what discount. Usually ends up "Buy me this new tool and it's a deal."
Thanks much for the warm welcome! Like I said, I have been reading TB for a good while now, and am getting my fair share of free education from all you guys, the 3 of you especially. It's pretty great to be part of this.
