First saddle

Hi all,
I've been reading this board for a while and thought it was time I finally posted. I'm currently working part time as a groundie while I finish college but I've really been itching to climb. I've been thinking about getting some equipment so I could start learning the different techniques (DRT, SRT) and practice them. I've been looking at the Petzl Navaho Vario and Buckingham Floating 2 Dee wide back. Are these good choices? Petzl seems like a natural choice because I rock climb and it seems like it offers a lot of freedom of movement but I'm open to other suggestions. I'm also looking at these saddles because of their price. Also considering some Samson Arbor Plex for my first line. Wesspur has a store here so I would be able to try them on before buying. Thanks a ton for any feedback.

Well you can find a hundred different opinions on a good saddle here. if you have somewhere to go try some on...do it! its way better to try em all on and hang in them. IMO. Also, do a search on the boards about saddles and well...you wont have enough time to read all of them.
Good Luck

The Petzl saddles don't seem to be too popular with arbos for a primary saddle. Petzl is working on developing an arbo saddle right now. It is planned for release next summer some time.

Don't think of your first saddle or rope as a try-and-throw-it-aside choice. Get a good setup from the start, you won't regret it.

If you can borrow one from a co-worker to try do it.

The Butterfly II and Blaze are my current favs.

Check with the sponosors of TB to see what you can find out too.

I have a V2 Bod and I like it.
It only has one attachment for the hitch and it's fine for one rope attachment but not as good when trying to make two attachments.
I like my Buckingham Pro Series.

I have the Petzl Navaho Vario. I like it. I am a minimalist when it comes to gear though. It is light and holds a saw. It does have a tendancy to ride up on me though. If you have big thighs it may not be the saddle for you.

Thanks for the input guys. I tend to be a minimalist too BostonBull (at least when rock climbing). I'll try to go in this week and try on some different saddles.

i have the weaver double D and I like the support it gives me, but it's a pretty hurky piece of equipment. Just the weight of it makes it not so desireable. I tried my boss' Butterfly the other day and it was very nice. Thats what Im getting next and I recommend you check it out as well.

I also have a butterfly 2 and think it's a fabulous harness, nice and soft, but the one I've stuck with is the Saddle XS as it's got a nicer central egg-shaped "D" that sits closer to my body and a great low back support for greater comfort climbing long days; the butterfly's bridge is just a bit too far out for it to work for me...see how particular everyone is???? Naturally, you'll want to custom-fit special things as you get a feel for what works for you...

I've climbed on the vario and it's a good saddle but i have found a fe problems with it. One the padding is not really comfortable for an all day type of job. The other is that the leg straps have a tendancy to slide if not tightened enough and the could squish ur boys. So if you want kids you might avoid it.
