just read ubout using a figure8 device for lowering trunks and
branches in smaller removals.
does anyone of U got experience with this?
it sounds pretty dangerous to me.

possible.

First of all...Welcome to TreeBuzz!

You'll find that the figure eight will put a lot of hockles in your rope.

Besides, the amount of friction you can generate with a figure eight is quite low and hard to adjust. A Munter hitch is a better choice or a small portable bollard. There are several available.

that`s exactly what im thinking.I´m just intested in rigging
this up, the only way i can imagine is with the figure 8 somewere over my head to get the rope in the right direction.

I´m just wundering why some british shops sell it for removals!

For the real small ones im using a munter hitch, for bigger ones a petzl tuba ;-)

hi guys
I'm aggree with Mark.definitly the figure 8 do too much friction and can damnage the rope ..plus you don't have a good control
the british shop sell for this use ,in my opinion ,cause in the past (15 years ago) when in europe wasn't so common the lowering device and the port a wrap ,the figure 8 was the only way for do a kind of rigging job...
welcome into the buzz...

hey there it was not my intention to buy one for rigging
i agree with you aubot to less friction and spinning the rope.
The only thing I I´d probably try is lowering smaller branches
wile pruning because the fig. 8 is very is very fast to lock off;so the groundy can care about cleaning up wile i`m cutting /forum/images/graemlins/icon10.gif
for bigger things i`m happy with my tuba;-)

Dangerous? Hardly!

The figure 8 is a simple and lightweight tool that is useful in many applications. Particularly out on a limb to lower person sized sections (thats what it was designed for don't forget, and is still used extensively by professional high angle technicians).

There are better devices for shock loading however. But for carrying around in the tips of awkward boughs and the ease of locking off and versatility, a rescue 8 with ears is still a good tool (standard 8s run the risk of girth hitching).

I have seen figure 8's used as a secondary control. For instance while speed lining. Attach via second rope to control the speed of wood on speed line. You still have to let it run if big. The 8 doesnt take the full load.
