I'm in NE Ohio.Spruce and pine hedges are fairly popular around here. Honeysuckle makes a nice hedge too. Bamboo would be a nightmare I feel.
@John_KAYS It'd be interesting to know how much room you have. I've put up espaliered Pears as Privacy borders. I see a lot of mixed pallisades over here, they'll have pallisades out of Stone or rusty sheet metal, then plant between the ends. I planted some climbing and rambling roses in conjunction with Pathenocissus quinquifolia and Parth. tricuspidata in front of such pallisades. I'm espaliering a Hydrangea petiolaris ssp. anomala just above a wall I built at my place
That way you get the neighbors to plant the privacy hedge!View attachment 36731
However... if I can figure out a fast and easy way to weld these together...
I like plants that provide a food source for humans/wildlife... lately, I've been using a couple of varieties of bush cherries, viburnums, chokeberry, chokecherry, currents, gooseberry and goji berry. All of these stay under 12' tall, and some (currents, gooseberry) are under 4' tall.

Thanks. That is a good list! Thanks for bringing this up, this is probably the single most common question I get, and def the most common planting/installation question. In addition to many of the above suggestions, and depending on conditions, I like:
Cryptomeria
Chamaecyparis spp.
Cherry Laurel
C. leylandii
C. nootkatensis
Cunninghamia
P. wallichiana
Green Giant arborvitae
