FAIRFIELD -- A town worker suffered serious injuries to his left leg Friday morning when a tree he was cutting down on Berkeley Road fell on him, trapping him underneath for nearly an hour.

Dan Garlock, 42, an automotive equipment operator for the Department of Public Works, was working with a crew cutting down trees on Berkeley Road when the accident occurred, according to Assistant Fire Chief Stephen Curry.

Firefighters got a call for assistance about 9:54 a.m., but by the time they arrived on the scene, the worker and his crew had managed to cut away most of the tree, Curry said.

The lower half of Garlock's left leg became wedged into the ground because of the tree's weight, Curry said, and it took firefighters 40 minutes to free the injured man.

While firefighters used hand tools to extricate Garlock's fractured leg from beneath the tree, he was administered intravenous fluids.

Once freed, he was transported by ambulance to Bridgeport Hospital, where he was reported in fair condition later Friday.
