External hard drives vs. online backup

I am looking for an external hard drive, 1Tb-2Tb. Has to be durable, and have a back up system built in in case of failure, fire, or the kids throwing it. Brands that I have been looking at are Western Digital and Iomega.

I was also told a great solution would be an on-line backup such as Carbonite.

BB- this is for yourself or business?

If you can, use both...the external back-up habit is great and the info is easily available when you need it. The on-line back-up services give you the piece of mind of data recovery in case of flood/fire/theft etc. However, they're not always perfect and may take some effort to recover all of your data (this is from experience).

I'm a bit neurotic when it comes to backing things up that I can't see :)

We started using Carbonite as an online back-up at the recommendation of our IT guy. I forget what brand our externals are. We did use Mozy, but when we had to retrieve our data, it was a bit of a pain.

BTW, I told you that I would let you know when we found a software for the biz. We started using RealGreen. So far, we are very impressed with the platform and the support team.

After letting our son try to back up some files today before he leaves town, for his computer, when I reconnected by My Book external drive, my computer won't recognize it now. Even after a restart.

My other son may know a solution. If not, I just bought a 2nd one last month for exactly this reason.

I'd rather have two or three 500 meg external drives than a 1 Terabyte drive.

We don't live in a flood zone. And my external is locked in a fireproof case.

Thanks for the update. Another friend of mine brought up a good point, I wont be recalling these files often, it is more for just archive purposes, in case something bad happens. Wondering if a static drive like a large thumb drive wouldnt be better?
