What should also be considered is the size of the cut - that is - years it will take to seal. On a young tree, most often, the cuts made will all seal the first year. On an older tree there is larger diameter throughout and most cuts made will take many more years to seal. With a heavier reduction, the first year will have vigorous response as the tree has stored what it needs for its pre-pruned canopy. The next year will have less response, and the next year will have even less as the roots die back and compensate for its new size.
The other thing I wanted to clear up is that I say 'memory' but I understand it to be only an appearance of memory. I don't think trees get confused and have feelings of what size they should or shouldn't be, it just seems like a way to look at it when explaining the 'phenomenon'.
If you haven't already...check out and vote for where You would make the cut.

Obviously, I wouldn't make the cut.
